What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology is the integration of technological advancement with use of a living organism for
one ‘s own benefit. By this definition, biotechnology is a tool for enhancing or to study at an
intricate level to produce desirable outcomes. The history of biotech would date back to the very
beginnings of civilization, when humankind tried selective breeding, domestication of animals
and crossbreeding in a system of agriculture. The advancement of technology results in a new
approach in studying nature.

Modern biotechnology caters gene splicing, gene editing and identification and recombinant
organisms. Biotechnology was revolutionized when scientists first learned gene isolation and
clone genes, allowing for deep understanding of the process and mechanism.

Today, the biotechnology Industry has grown and extended to affect us on a day-to-day basis.

The breakthrough of modern biotechnology shaped products and technologies to view in

treating diseases, tackled our environmental impact and footprint, alternative energy trends,
maximizing crop production to feed the hunger, to have safer, cleaner industrial manufacturing
processes.
The knowledge and technology applications generated through research are contributing to
technological advancement in many countries of Asia and the Pacific region. Agricultural sector
represents a broad range of technologies used for genetic improvement of plant and animals.
Characterization and genetic conservation, rapid diagnosis of plant or animal diseases are just
few of the aids of this new approach.

Recent advances in biotechnology are aiding us to meet society‘s most persistent challenges.

1.2 Medicine

Biotech allows to explore and by harnessing nature's own potential, understand our own genetic
makeup to develop and produced methods of research by:
• Rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases;
• Develop and produce guidelines for medication.
• Changing the odds of serious, life-threatening conditions affecting millions around the
world;
• Tailoring treatments to individuals to minimize health risks and side effects;
• Develop a cutting-edge technology for disease detection; and
• Combating serious illnesses
