Geodatabase data model is a container of spatial and attribute data and enables the user to store many different
types of GIS data within its structure.

The term geodatabase which stands for geographic database was introduced by Environmental Systems
Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) when releasing its ArcGIS 8 software products. In ArcGIS and related literature,
this term carries several meanings (Zeiler, 1999) .

A common data access and management framework for ArcGIS software products that aims to enable users
deploying GIS functionality using cross-platform hardware and software architectures, including desktops,
servers, mobile devices, and the Internet, in a fully interoperable environment;

A generic GIS data model for defining all types of geospatial data by using a rich set of data types and
sophisticated referential integrity and topological rules;

An instance of a relational or object-relational database that has been enhanced by adding geospatial data
storage, referential integrity constraints, map display, feature editing, and spatial analysis functions.

From the perspective of digital spatial data representation, a geodatabase can be perceived as a top-level unit of
geospatial data structured using the object-oriented model. Its components include a collection of sets, object

classes, feature classes, and relationship classes. In a geodatabase, all data sets and classes are stored in tables
within a single database system.
