1 What are dependent prepositions?

Some prepositions naturally come after certain words in English. They ‘depend on’ the words that
come before them.

Preposition Example sentence

about Patrick was worried about his grandma.

for You should apply for that job.

in Her interest in books started when she

of Angela is afraid of heights.

on She is keen on hiking and skiing.

DEPENDENT PREPOSITIONS

Dependent prepositions can come after adjectives, nouns and verbs.


They can also come after direct objects:
Let me congratulate you on your promotion.

Some words go together with more than one preposition.


I’m angry about my water bill. = you are angry about something
I’m angry with/at Marcus for using too much water. = you are angry with/at someone

The structure of the sentences is: verb + preposition + noun/ing form.

The structure of the sentences is: noun + preposition + noun/ing form.
