2 About Capture Recognition Engine

This section provides an overview of Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4.

Capture Recognition Engine (CRE) involves a wide range of latest imaging, reading, document
registration, and document classification technologies. Its versatile programming interface permits to
implement ambitious ICR projects, covering forms with quite restricted layouts as well as common
documents with almost arbitrary structure (= free forms). A graphical interface supports users in doing
so.

CRE can be integrated and used in several different configurations. Depending on the configuration,
different parts of the installation are of importance:
• Runtime installation of CRE
• Development tools and environments for CRE (RSO interface, SDK)

You may choose among the various options during installation. In addition, this structure is mirrored
on the installation medium in the folder <drive>:\CRE\Disk1\. See below for a more detailed
description.

Note that legacy and RecoStar Object Interface parameterizations are still mutually compatible, that is
LGK projects may be run using a respective class in the .NET interface and projects generated with
the modern, .NET-based RDS tool may also be used with the LGK interface. This, however, may
change in upcoming versions. The RecoStar-Z interface is no longer supported with the x64 variant.

You can copy the complete runtime software from the folder ...\bin after installation. To simplify
deployment, the installation medium also contains redistributables, merge modules, and information
supporting software distribution for both x64 and x86 variants.

Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4 Release Notes

3
Note that the installation medium contains both x64 and x86 products “OpenText Capture Recognition
Engine” and “OpenText Capture Full Page Reader”. The root path for x86 version on the installation
medium is <drive>:\CRE\Disk1, whereas for the x64 version it is <drive>:\CRE(x64)\Disk1.
The installation of the requested version (x64 and x86) is supported by the master setup.

The legacy components are now removed from the installation medium. If required, use one of the
previous version to install the legacy components.

Note: Risk of loss of information:

It is possible, to use Open Text Capture Recognition to generate various types of output files,
for example searchable PDF or PDF/A files from scanned documents for archiving or other
purposes. As in every conversion process, however, not all of the information contained in the
original paper or image document may be present in the final output file. Especially 100%
correct interpretation of the input image cannot be guaranteed. To avoid loss of information,
OpenText recommends to either keep the original document or image and/or to implement
specific means of output data quality control.

This note also applies to Full Page Field Parameter Processing Mode. The new mode allows
the user to use the “electronic text” (EText) stored in input PDF files. PDF EText can be
extracted directly, or it can be combined with the OCR result. In both modes there also is a risk
of loss of information. For more information, see section “Use EText in PDF files” in the Capture
Recognition Engine RecoStar Design Studio Tutorial (CPRE-CTL).

When generating searchable PDF as output OpenText recommends to install the font Arial
Unicode and/or Unicode BMP Fallback SIL to ensure that all characters are embedded
correctly. For PDF generation, CRE makes use of some typical installed system-fonts, which
cover most (but not all) characters: Arial, Courier New, Times new Roman, Calibri, Segoe UI,
Tahoma, SimHei, Microsoft YaHei, MingLiU, Microsoft JhengHei, MS Mincho, MS Gothic, Yu
Gothic, Gulim, Malgun Gothic, Angsana New, Leelawadee UI. Missing fonts for writing special
words result in an error message and in writing a replacement character in PDF. Especially if
PDF files are created containing an Asian language, the font Arial Unicode should be installed.
Characters with codes >16 bit or PUAs are not processed and are substituted to “~”.

2.1 New features

Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4 includes the following new features.

Language Vietnamese
Language Vietnamese is supported for machine printed text.

PDF Input Files for Linux

On Linux reading of PDF files is supported. For fields of type “FullPageField” the processing modes
“OcrFromImage”, “ExtractFromEText” and new mode “UseETextOrOcr” are supported.

ProcessingMode “UseETextOrOcr”
Behind mode “UseETextOrOcr” is a strategy to use either EText or OCR text result. EText is used, if
the input file contains any kind of usable visible EText. Otherwise the OCR result is used.

Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4 Release Notes

4
Therefore OCR result is always used for input images, e.g. for Non-PDF input files.

Non-usable EText characters are those with the following code values:
0xE000-0xF8FF – Unicode Block Private Use Area
0xFFF0-0xFFFB – Unicode Block Specials part1
0xFFFE-0xFFFF – Unicode Block Specials part2
> 0xFFFF - 32 bit codes

5
Improved rendering of PDF files
This version contains the latest Ghostscript version (V 9.52) with additional patches which leads to an
improved rendering of PDF input files.

Tip: To verify a rendered image when it was not processed:

To get detailed diagnosis information on not loadable images use the improved diagnostics tool
AnalyzeImageFile.exe, which is located in the bin folder of the installation.
You can start the program from the RecoStar Design Studio. If an error message is shown when
you add a file to the Batch File List view, click OK. Then right-click the respective file in the Batch
File List view, point to Image File Diagnostics, and then click This Page. An XML file with
diagnostic information and an error log is written to the project folder. When you use the feature for
the first time, a dialog box opens to select the XML viewer file. Select the executable of a suitable
text or XML viewer (that is Notepad.exe), and then confirm with Open.
Alternatively, you can start the program from a command prompt with the command:
AnalyzeImageFile.exe [-p<page number>] <file name>
To create an XML file, use:
AnalyzeImageFile.exe -p<page number> -l<log file> <file name>

2.2 Features not supported anymore

4.3 OpenText product compatibility

The section provides details about which versions of other OpenText products are compatible with this
release of Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4.

Note: For the latest compatibility information for OpenText products, refer to the Compatibility
Matrix (https://knowledge.opentext.com/go/matrix) on OpenText My Support.

Shutdown
"RecoStar::GlobalFunctions::ShutDown()" must be called at the very last call to API.
After shutdown the API is not usable anymore. Starting with version 16.6 it is not allowed to call
"ShutDown()" within DllMain.

RecoStar.Runtime.SavePDFOperator
Class SavePdfOperator has a property “ImageType” which specifies the type of image that should be
saved into a PDF output file. With previous versions the image types “BinaryImage” and “OcrImage”
were not supported if using BatchOperator with ProcessCount > 0.
Starting with version 7.2 both image types are generally not supported anymore. Instead use the
property “SavePdfOperator.ImageProcessing” to save a fitting binary image into a PDF file. The
programming example “CreatePDF” demonstrates usage of property
“SavePdfOperator.ImageProcessing”.

11
LGK and RecoStar-Z interfaces
The interfaces LGK and RecoStar-Z do not support direct loading of classifiers anymore. Calling the
interface functions Lc_SendClass (LGK) and RsUseClassifier (RecoStar-Z) will lead to an error. Only
the extended interfaces with “AutoLoad” functionality, which have been introduced with RecoStar
Professional version 2.5 are still supported.

4.4 Language support

Capture Recognition Engine is currently localized in the following languages. Additional languages
may be available in future releases.

8 Known issues
The following known issues exist in this release.

• Functionality DetectHandWriting works for CJK languages/countries. But it does not work for other
country sets, which need Unicode character coding, (e.g. “VIETNAM”, “ENGLISH;CYRILLIC”)
(RSP-9518)
• LINUX: For CJK languages usage of PDF EText only works, if field parameter
“RestrictOutputToCharacterSet=Off”. For “RestrictOutputToCharacterSet=On” only reject
characters are extracted from EText (RSP-9513).
• For a new FullPage-Project, the default value of DetectBlackFrame of the
DetectPaperAreaOperator is now set to false. This parameter is necessary to improve the
recognition of inverted text.
• XFA PDF document cannot be loaded into RDS (RSP-6375). PDF files written by Adobe LiveCycle
are in XFA (XML Forms Architecture) format which is proprietary and cannot be opened by
software other than Adobe Acrobat.
• Interactive forms in PDFs are not supported in CRE because the rendering of such forms is
imprecise by definition.
• If an ImageWorkItem is created from a PDF file, then the work item might contain EText from the
PDF input file. If the ImageWorkItem is saved to a TIFF file, the EText will be stored in private
tags. If you do not want the EText to be stored, use the method RemoveEText of
ImageWorkItem before the file is stored.
• For fields of type FullPageField, the style property Spaced is never set in the output properties
TextLineParser.Style, TextLineSegmentParser.Style and WordParser.Style.
• For fields of type FullPageField, the value of the word result field DictionaryInfo is always
None.
• Since version 6.0, 5.0 projects cannot be exported immediately after loading. Before the project is
exported, it must be saved.
• The dictionaries of the 6.0 operator Dictionaries cannot be used as a user dictionary in an
IcrField.
• For barcode reading, the image resolution should be identical in horizontal and vertical direction. If
necessary, this can be achieved by using the parameter Unify resolution in the
ImageSourceOperator.
• To store intermediate results in RecoStar Design Studio (RDS), deep folder structures are
necessary. If in addition very long project names are used, the maximum path length of 254
characters may be exceeded. It is recommended to select a destination folder with a short path
length when you copy files with GenerateExamplesInUserDirectory.exe.

Capture Recognition Engine CE 20.4 Release Notes

13
• The contents of user folders loaded into CRE cannot be changed during runtime of the respective
CRE process.
• Reg Exp Formatter fields must not refer to other Reg Exp Formatter fields. In the Pattern
parameter of Reg Exp Formatter fields, no Named Captures are allowed.
• If PDF input files use fonts that are not embedded, an unspecific error message may occur:
“[Unknown] Cannot load image...”. Possible reasons are: “Font is missing in the Ghostscript
CIDFMAP file” or “Font is not present at the Windows system”.
The CIDFMAP file may be enhanced on request by OpenText.
Necessary font files must be provided by the customer.
• To be able to build the programming example RunProjectCPP the value of the <HintPath> tag
in the vcproj file:
.\Programming\Examples .NET\RunProjectMCPP\RunProjectMCPP.vcxproj,
has to be changed to the correct path of the installed RecoStar.dll.
<ItemGroup>
<Reference Include="RecoStar, Version=5.0.1.176, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=7ca08498c01dc4d5">
<HintPath>..\..\..\bin\RecoStar.dll</HintPath>
• Unicode File Names: With V7.1/7.0 for all types of files used during runtime CRE supports
Unicode file names (input / output file names, project file names, and dictionary file names used in
projects). The installation folder still has to be ANSI-coded.
Note that Unicode file names are only supported by the RSO .NET interface. The RSO C++
interface does not support Unicode file names.
Note that in combination with ZIP utilities Unicode file names in project ZIP files appear as ANSI
file names. Importing the ZIP file in RecoStar Design Studio obtains the original Unicode file name.
• The FPRConverter tool does not show any message if it is used in demo mode for the Asian
