THERE has been an-
other Royal celebra-
tion this week – but
not quite as big as the
recent wedding!
Mable Barnes, from
Alexandra Nursing
Home, Poulton, has
proudly received her
birthday card from the
Queen after turning a
100 years old.
She was over-the-moon
with her achievement and
said: “I thoroughly en-
joyed my birthday party
and was glad to see some
of my old friends.
“Although I’m 100, some-
times I feel ancient but
other times I feel young.
“My life has been a hap-
py one, with lots of lovely
memories.”
With a quarter of young-
sters now expected to be-
come centenarians – ac-
cording to recent figures
– 100th birthday celebra-
tions may become a com-
mon occurrence in time.
Mable has lived through
two world wars, seen
countless scientific break-
throughs and experienced
many changes in society.
She has grand-children
and great-grandchildren
all over the world, from
Blackpool to the USA and
all the way to Australia
– some of who travelled for
more than 24 hours.
Jeanette Jacobs, Ma-
ble’s daughter, said “It was
lovely to see my mum at
a hundred, enjoying her
party surrounded by
her family and life long
friends.
“All my mum wanted
for her birthday was to
receive her birthday card
from the queen.”
Carer Lynsey Calves-
bert, from the nursing
home, said “Mable is an
inspiration to the younger
generation, she is a beauti-
ful lady out and in.
“Working with Mable is
a complete pleasure. She
touches the hearts of every
person she meets, making
them smile and laugh.
“I have to say it’s great
to see some one of Mable’s
age still able to enjoy life to
the full.”
“Everyone who work’s
with Mable would agree
she is a sweet lady a total
inspiration.”
