Answer ALL questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided.
1. The diagram below shows the ‘finger-nose’ test, which is used to test whether a person can carry out a
series of motor actions to produce smooth and accurate movement. In this test, the doctor will hold his

4. Dodder is a parasitic plant. A young dodder plant seems to be able to ‘smell’ the tomato plants growing
nearby. It is hypothesised that the young dodder can detect the volatile chemicals produced by the
tomato shoots. This signal detected then causes the young dodder to grow towards and twine around the
stem of the tomato plant. The following experiment was conducted to test this hypothesis. The set-up
of the experiment and the result are shown in the figure below. In the experiment, the soil used for both
plants was the same.

9. Scientists have proposed two hypotheses to explain why a greater amount of auxins is found in the
shaded side than the lighted side when a coleoptile is illuminated with unilateral light.

Hypothesis A: Light destroys auxins in the lighted side of plant

Hypothesis B: Auxins move from the lighted side to the shaded side of the plant

A scientist performed an experiment to test Hypothesis A. He used agar blocks to collect auxins from
coleoptile tips under different conditions. Then he placed each agar block on one side of a decapitated
coleoptile. The set-up was kept in darkness for two days. He then measured the degree of bending of
the coleoptile. The diagram below shows his experimental set-ups and the results:

10. In 1961, two scientists, Jacob and Monod, proposed the concept of messenger RNA (mRNA). They
founded this concept on the known fact that protein synthesis takes place in the cytoplasm rather than
in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. They thought that the genes in the nucleus must specify a mobile
chemical intermediate for directing the synthesis of proteins in the cytoplasm. They named this
intermediate “the structural messenger".

(a) State a site in the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell where protein synthesis takes place. (1 mark)

this guess. (1 mark)

_______________________________________________________________________

After scientists had determined that mRNA serves as a copy of each gene's DNA and specifies the
sequence of amino acids in proteins, they became interested in studying how the message in the mRNA
(as the sequence of codons) can be translated into the required sequence of amino acids.

(c) At that time, scientists already had the knowledge that there are four different bases in mRNA and
that there are 20 different naturally occurring amino acids. They believed that the codons in the
mRNA were triplets. Explain the rationale behind this idea. (2 marks)

The breakthrough in decoding the triplet genetic codes was brought about by the availability of
techniques for making synthetic mRNA strands and analyzing the amino acid composition of a
polypeptide. The first synthetic mRNA made is shown below. After translation, this gives a polypeptide
consisting entirely of the amino acid phenylalanine.

encoded by each codon. (2 marks)
