Define

An electric Iron is a general household appliance used to press the wrinkles out of the clothes.
This works on the basis that the combination of heat and pressure removes wrinkles.
A clothes iron (also flatiron, smoothing iron, or simply iron) is a small appliance that, when
heated, is used to press clothes to remove creases.

Setting up to iron

1.Get your area set up. The best place to iron is using an ironing board, as it is designed
to absorb heat and moisture. Never iron on any surfaces which are flammable.

2. Check the iron to be sure the base plate is clean. Scorched build-up of starch or
sizing can be transferred to clean fabrics. Take a look at your ironing board cover as
well. It should be clean. Most covers can be washed or easily replaced.

3. Before you begin, read the garment or linen care label. There will be ironing
guidelines written or shown with symbols. If the label is missing, refer to an ironing
temperature setting chart for different fabrics. It is always best to start with the
coolest temperature recommended for the fabric. You can always increase the heat
but cooling an iron takes longer.

4.Heat up the iron by turning the dial to the setting required for the clothing you’re
are planning to iron.

Ironing Safety Rules:

1. Always iron on a sturdy ironing board.

2. Avoid ironing with kids around.
3. Position the power cord safely.
4. Dont leave the iron unattended.
5. Never use an electric iron near water.
6. Never use a damaged or leaking iron.

Proper use of flatiron

1.Extend the life of the iron by using distilled water which is devoid of heavy metals.
You can buy this by the gallon or make your own on the stove by collecting steam.
You can also use rainwater, which doesn’t contain heavier metals.
2.After every use, unplug the iron and empty out the water reservoir so the residual
heat from the iron can help to dry it out. Set the iron in a safe place while it cools
then store it upright in a cool, dry place.

3.Clean your iron frequently as needed. When the iron is unplugged and cool, rinse
out the water reservoir with hot water. Wipe the entire iron down including the cord
with a damp clean cloth. Use a second clean cloth to dry the iron and store it in a
cool dry place.

4.Clean out the water reservoir to help avoid hard water build up. Pour white
vinegar into the water chamber, turn it on high, and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Turn it
off, unplug it and pour the white vinegar out. Let it air dry and cool off then refill it
with clean water and rinse.

5.Clean any residual starch or dirt on the soleplate with a clean cloth dampened with
white vinegar. For stubborn residue, mix baking soda and warm water and give it a
good scrub. Wipe the paste away with a clean damp cloth. Air dry before use.

6.If the iron isn’t steaming like it should, you may need to clean out the steam ports
to remove minerals that could be causing a clog. Take a thin piece of wire, like a
straightened paper clip, and clean the ports by poking the wire in the holes.

How to iron the long sleeves

Start with the shoulder, move to the top buttons and then finish up the rest of the body
side. When you are ironing the button holes on this side, make sure you smooth the
seaming down with your hands first. While holding the bottom of the shirt taut, iron
slowly up the button holes towards the top of the shirt.

How to iron the shirts

“Start with the collar,” Tierney says. “First iron the underside and then move onto the
outer side, making sure to work from the outer edge of collar towards the middle.
