Good driving practice

Gerry Norton spent a gap year in Africa and rounded off his stay with an
unexpected car chase.
‘When I left school, I spent my gap year being a volunteer teacher in a
school in Africa. I had a great year, doing plays and music with the children
and getting involved in village life. At the end of my time there, my parents
came to stay.
One day, we borrowed one of the few cars in the village, and went out for a
drive by ourselves. I hadn’t seen many wild animals during the year, but that
afternoon we saw a herd of about 12 elephants. Dad asked me to stop the
car because he wanted to take some photos.
Suddenly another elephant appeared from the bushes. It was obviously
older and quite a bit bigger than the others. And it was not very happy to
see us. It started running towards us, and obviously wasn’t just being
friendly.
I reversed the car behind some more bushes. But that wasn’t enough. The
elephant followed and chased us. It chased us for about two or three
kilometres, up small hills, round trees and bushes, with our car going as fast
as possible. My Dad was still trying to take photos. My Mum said she
thought she was going to be sick.
Finally, it slowed down a bit, and I managed to drive off. I’ve never been so
frightened in my life. But I still love Africa. In fact, I’m going back for a
holiday this year.’
