Activity 1: Speaking
Topic 1
‘Animals should never be kept in captivity.’

Agree
• It’s not natural for animals to be in captivity.
• It’s cruel/unkind.
• It can make animals behave strangely.

Disagree
• It can help endangered species to survive.
• It’s a good way for people to learn about animals they might never see.

Topic 2
‘Everyone should expect privacy all the time, whoever they are. Photographers should not take
pictures of famous people on holiday, for example.’

Agree
• Even if people are famous they should have private time with their families and friends.
• Famous people should be able to do routine activities, like shopping or going to the gym,
in privacy.

Disagree
• There are lots of advantages to being famous so people must experience some disadvantages
as well.
• It’s more interesting to find out about famous people than people you don’t know.

Topic 3
‘Exams are the best way to test people’s knowledge.’

Agree
• We need a way to show how much people know.
• If people sit in the same room together for a test, it will be fair.

Disagree
• Exams are unrealistic, people learn a lot before the exam and then forget it all immediately
afterwards.
• Exams only prove how good people are at taking tests rather than how clever theya re.
• Exams are unfair if someone is ill on the day of the exam.
• Assessing coursework is a good alternative to tests.
