INTRODUCTION

This is all about the relationship between Dorian and Mix-

olydian.

You can play through most of the track with E Dorian (E F# G A B C# D) but
notice how the E chords alternate between Em7 and Eadd9. The Eadd9
chords are major, so you’ll need Mixolydian (E F# G# A B C# D).

Those two scales are so close in sound, but so far apart in function. The
minor/major 3rd change (G to G#) makes all the difference. You could pos-
sibly get away with Dorian over the Eadd9, but Mixolydian will sound bad
over the Em7.

You could also try E minor pentatonic (E G A B D) instead of Dorian, and E

major pentatonic (E F# G# B C#) instead of Mixolydian. You’ll also need C
Lydian (C D E F# G A B) for that final Cmaj7 chord.
