Near Doubles Guiding Question: How do I deal with conflicts in Math Centres while I am teaching Guided Math Observation Notes: -only 6 independent students in your first rotation! All on task -PP – “sit up and do your job” -PP took a bathroom break – remember to watch and limit -“DF what is the problem? DF did you solve the problem?” -“Does everyone have something to do?” – Make sure everyone hears you! Rephrase to make it more meaningful, holding the students accountable – is everyone ready to do their next job? -TB and LM – whisper! -BR and DF arguing about cheating -“Grade 1s, what should Math with a Friend sound like? Whispering, right?” - they were all in close quarters on the carpet, so it always sounds louder -“LM and BH, pick something to do, please.” “Can everyone find something to do?” – no one heard you -Checked specifically with ES– good -BT, EL, TT – playing war – lots of arguing – TT keeping them off task -“TT are you doing your job?” – “Yeah, I’m doing my job.” – went right back to hiding his cards behind his back, pulling his ten to the top of the pile, shoving cards in locker, playing with glasses - I intervened to nip this behavior as they did not play one round of war -EL and BT did a great job of their next centres, TT after he noticed me watching him -PP took another bathroom break *Watch your timing on these days – leave enough time for cleanup and recess. You can have your snack after if you feel rushed.
