COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY – DRAFT 1

TOPIC: COMPARISON AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLASSICAL ART AND

MODERN ART

Modern and classical art are two of the most contrasting styles of art ever created.
Classical art includes some of the earliest works of art currently in existence, and it
established a standard for visual beauty that has stood the test of time. The sombre and
visually attractive stories of classical art were admired. Modern art, on the other hand, was
defiant, paradoxical, and sometimes misunderstood.

No matter how big the differences between modern and classical art is, they also possessed
some similarities that makes them equally unique in their own way. As example, classical and
modern art share the same representation in some of the art medium such as in painting,
architecture, and sculpture. Not only that, while modern artist tends to produce rebellious
pieces against classical style, they still use similar fundamental of artistic technique and skills
in terms of the art’s value, form, perspective, line, space, balance and as well as composition.

However, the differences between classical art and modern art are what makes them unique
as they possessed a distinct style. Classical art is more aesthetically pleasing while modern
art is more rebellious. Classical art was created to be aesthetically pleasant and captivating.
All real-life photographs and sculptures were altered to appear immortal or majestic. While
modern art isn't necessarily universally relatable or appealing in the same way. Some of their
styles are even deemed jarring from an aesthetic standpoint. This is because the concept of
classical art is to appear life-like, to tell a story of civilization, and to please the eyes. This can
be seen as classical art is famous in embellishing architectural structure. While modern art
can also be seen as a décor nowadays, before this it is brought up for an entirely different
reason as classical art. Modern art is more abstract, bold, and loud because it is used as a
statement for the artist to voice out their opinion towards the society during the art being
made. Such as Andy Warhol that is famous for American pop-culture representation, or
Banksy who is known for his revolutionary arts against the authority (Sothesby’, 2020).
