GREEN PEAS
Pisum sativum

Here is an interesting fact. Peas are actually

seeds and, botanically speaking, a pea pod is a fruit
because it grows from a flower. Because they are
nutritious and typically pleasant to eat, these
beautiful tiny legumes are a perfect first "green" food
for infants. Between the ages of 6 and 8 months, peas
are usually advised for a baby's diet. Any feeding
concerns should be discussed with a pediatrician in
detail, as generalizations may not apply to every kid.
A cup of peas contains more protein than a
tablespoon of peanut butter, and it also contains
calcium, vitamin A and C, as well as iron. The fact that
vitamin C aids bodies in absorbing iron from plant
sources make this an essential combination for babies.
Although garden peas are one of the most commonly
used ingredients in processed baby foods, they're also
delicious on their own and even more so when mixed
with a little butter. However, the small pea shape can
be difficult for children to eat, so make sure to follow
the age-appropriate cooking instructions on the next
page.
No, peas are not a common allergen for babies,
to answer the question. However, if there are signs
that a child is allergic to legumes, talk to a pediatric
allergist before introducing peas, and as always, start
with a small quantity for the first couple of servings.
Fortunately, people with peanut allergies are not
more likely to be allergic to garden peas or other
legumes. If there is a suspicion that a child is allergic,
talk to a pediatric allergist before introducing peas to
their diet.
