FACTORING

POLYNOMIALS

Grade 10-Peru
Factoring is to write an
expression as a product of
factors. For example, we can
write 10 as (5)(2), where 5
and 2 are called factors of
10.

GCF
The greatest common
factor (GCF) for a polynomial
is the largest monomial that
is a factor of (divides) each
term of the polynomial.

Note: The GCF must be a

factor of EVERY term in the
polynomial.

AC METHOD
The AC Method is a method of factoring
trinomials in the form 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 . It
forms an alternative to the “guessing
method.” Given a quadratic expression with
the terms 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄, we are often asked
to factor. What we are being asked to do is
find two expressions, which multiply to give
the original expression.

GROUPING
Factor by Grouping is useful when
there is no common factor among
the terms, and you split the
expression into two pairs and factor
each of them separately.
STEPS:
To factor a trinomial of the form ax2 + bx + c by
grouping, we carry out the procedure as shown
below:
• Find the product of the leading coefficient “a” and
the constant “c.”
⟹ a * c = ac
• Look for the factors of the “ac” that add to
coefficient “b.”
• Rewrite bx as a sum or difference of the factors of
ac that add to b.
⟹ ax2 + bx + c = ax2 + (a + c) x + c
⟹ ax2 + ax + cx + c
• Now factor by grouping.
⟹ ax (x + 1) + c (x + 1)
⟹ (ax + c) (x + 1)
