Function
a relationship between two
variables such that for every x,
there is exactly one y.

Vertical Line Test
If each vertical line intersects a
graph in the x-y plane at exactly
one point, then the graph illustrates
a function.

Where will I use this in
real-life situation?
REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS
● Plants rely on the amount of
sunlight and rainfall for
growth.
● The area of square is defined
by the length of its side.
● The area of a circle is a
function of its radius. (A = 𝜋r2)
REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS

A jeepney and its plate

number?

Evaluation of Functions
means finding the value of f(x)
EXAMPLES:
● If y = x + 8 or f(x) = x + 8,
find f(4):
f(4) = 4 + 8
f(4) = 12
EXAMPLES:
● If y = x + 8 or f(x) = x + 8,
find f(-2):
f(-2) = -2 + 8
f(-2) = 6
EXAMPLES:
● If y = x + 8 or f(x) = x + 8,
find f(x + 3):
f(x + 3) = (x + 3) + 8
f(x + 3) = x + 11
MORE EXAMPLES:
● If f(x) = 5x - 3, find f(-2).
MORE EXAMPLES:
● If f(x) = 3x - 7, find f(8).
MORE EXAMPLES:
● If f(x) = 5x - 3, find f(x - 1).
MORE EXAMPLES:
2
● If f(x) = x - 3x + 4, find f(1).
MORE EXAMPLES:
● If f(x) = 3x2 - x + 5, find
f(x + 1).

Yes, of course! Just okay... I don’t

understand...
It’s your turn to
shine!
SEATWORK:
