CASE # 2:

CONSOLIDATED PRODUCTS

I. CENTRAL PROBLEM

As plant managers at Consolidated Products, both Ben and Phil are a good leader in their own

distinctive way of managerial approaches style. Ben as a relationship oriented type of manager

has worked at the plant for 10 years and has developed many relationships with the employees at

the plant. His way of managing people is a people-oriented management style that tends to

energized employees because it makes them feel appreciated for the work they do. Overall, Ben

concern himself in building personal relationship with his employees that can alleviate

employees’ loyalty towards the company and create harmonious communication to them, closely

monitoring to avoid layoffs when production slowed down. He didn’t set goals or require the

supervisors to follow a set of standards.

Meanwhile, due to low in production, Ben was push to early retirement and he was replaced by

Phil who was completely opposite to his people-oriented managerial style. This changes

everything; layoff is pushed through, strict close monitoring of individual performance, and

performance-driven base evaluation which lead for most employees to resign from work.

II. OBJECTIVES

1. To identify the pros and cons between people-oriented managerial style and task-

oriented leadership.

2. To evaluate each course of action in low production cost yet layoffs reduction.
3. To assert either Ben or Phil work effectively and efficiently at Consolidated

Products.

IV. RECOMMENDATIONS

In order for the Consolidated Products be most efficient, the plant manager should have both

characteristics of both task oriented and relationship oriented management styles. The key is to

take the best parts of each management style and combine them to create your own approach,

one that gets tasks done while also cultivating positive working relationships. To achieve high

employee satisfaction and performance, there needs to be a balance between employee

relationship and plant objectives. Building good relationships with the employees and rewarding

them would help the overall moral and production output at the plant. Both Ben and Phil do their

best to act as efficient managers on their own way yet focusing only on people-oriented type of

management will generate both pros and cons and same way for task-oriented type of

management.
