Committee: Human Rights Council

Topic: Myanmar crisis
Country: Arab Republic of Egypt
Delegate name: Sara Šantić

The Rohingya Muslims become a targe of in that time current government after the
creation of the toxic nationalist movement based on Buddhist identity. Myanmar has
over one hundred ethnic minorities, of which 87.9% of them are religiously declared as
a Buddhists. In order to unite these minorities and redistribute power after gaining
independence, the Myanmar government chooses the Rohingya Muslims as the most
vulnerable community at the local and world level. As a result, since 1962 crimes
against this ethnic minority have been constantly committed. The Egyptian government
got involved in this problem in 2017 and condemns the Myanmar government for the
crimes committed against Rohingya Muslims. The Egyptian government calls on the
Myanmar government to take responsibility for its population and in a statement
emphasizes cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to effectively
resolve this crisis.
The government is working to help refugees. So far, we have donated 120 tons of
humanitarian aid in food and accommodation. Egypt will help and support for the
return of Rohingya Muslims to their homeland. Egypt, as a member of the Organization
for Islamic Cooperation, supported the Gambia, which brought charges against
Myanmar at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Also, Egypt called on the UN
Security Council to hold an emergency session to discuss the developments of the
Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. Egypt is actively working to help during the crisis and is
cooperating with like-minded countries.
So far, the solutions are not fully effective. The latest solution for relocating refugees to
Bhasan Char Island has significant drawbacks. This remote island is in danger during
the monsoon period. A large amount of funds has been invested in the restoration and
protection of the island. There is another possible solutions on this topic. Of course, no
solution is perfect until Myanmar takes responsibility and returns the Rohingya
Muslims to their homes, as called for by the Egyptian government.
