The Female Brain

Julia Brizendine, a stern university neurologist, studies the variations between the female
and male brain. She assumes she is worked out how to control her feelings, much to the
chagrin of her assistant Abby. Brizendine is divorced and living with her parents, while Abby is
on an unhealthy amount of drugs.
Lisa Hampton and her 12-year-husband Steven have a son named Tyler. Lisa is upset
that their friendship has deteriorated, so they go on a date and get high on ecstasy to spice
things up. Nothing is working, so they are contemplating divorce.
Lexi Mercer, a perfectionist from the United Kingdom, obsesses about her boyfriend of
2-3 years, Adam Simmons. Adam, who is friends with Steven, is happy with his appearance and
will not straighten his hair as Lexi wishes. As Lexi insists on investigating a tumor on his back,
which turns out to be benign, they break up. Lexi pays a weekend visit to her parents and finds
that her mother fusses over her in the same way she fusses over Adam. She returns to Adam's
place, where he is taken aback by her lack of makeup. She regrets attempting to change him
and hopes to begin again.
Zoe Green-Basker works as a sales manager for a marketing agency and despises
gender roles. She is on the verge of launching her own business with loftier ambitions. Greg,
her professional basketball player husband, and she have been married for one year. Greg
resents those around him one day while recovering from an accident at home, so he decides to
renovate the bathroom himself. It is not going well. Greg is taken aback when he sees a
contractor working on the bathroom renovation, and the two get into a physical altercation. Zoe,
who comes home in the middle of the day, breaks up the confrontation and reveals that it was
meant to be a surprise for him. In addition, Zoe says that she has left her job and that she wants
Greg to invest in her new company.
Brizendine scans the brains of test subjects as part of her study. Before going into the
MRI machine, a patient called Kevin Avery flirts with her. Despite what she's been telling
herself, Brizendine is trapped. Kevin's brain scan shows no empathy, so Brizendine emotionally
dismisses him. But the next day, he calls her to ask her out on a date, and she reluctantly
accepts. Following that, she easily initiates intercourse, assuming that this is what he needs, but
Kevin declines. He believes he needs more, something more profound. Kevin offers to patch an
electrical wire as Brizendine moves into a new home. She makes it transactional by agreeing to
pay him, persuaded that her studies tell her what he wants. Brizendine then tells Kevin off and
tells him she is happy without him when he comes to her campus office because she hasn't
answered his messages. He argues that her testing is distorted because of her.
Brizendine undergoes a brain scan herself. Her brain responds to the stimuli, and she
knows she has no control over it at this point. She must understand that female and male brains
are not the same, and that displaying feelings is not a sign of weakness. She even gave a TED
talk on the subject. Brizendine discovers she loves Kevin and finds him at work, admitting that
loving him will be worth it even though he broke her heart.
The movie shows different ways on how people handle their romantic relationship,
without looking at their gender. Lisa did not easily give up on her marriage with Steven. She
tried various methods to bring the sparks of their relationship but they ended up being divorced.
The relationship of Lexi and Adam is kind of toxic for me at first because Lexi controlled Adam
too much. In the perspective of Lexi, she was trying to help Adam be better however, Adam
wanted to decide on his own, leaving his stuff to his hands. Helding a discussion to settle their
dilemma and having conditions to improve their relationship, they got back together. Zoe and
Greg resolved their matter by complementing the needs of each other. Zoe being resigned can
now give Greg much attention that he wanted. Kevin helped Julia realize that not everything can
be done in a scientific manner. Letting her guard down is not being weak and loving for the
second time, especially to a man like Kevin, is worth the risk. Julia learned from her research
that the weaknesses of a woman seen by the society can be converted as their strengths.
The structure of the movie is quite interesting. They include scientific explanations about
what is happening inside the minds of the characters as the plot is ongoing. The relationships of
the characters are realistic that make the audience easily connect to the movie.
If I am going to give this movie a rating, I would give it a 3 out of 5. With many plots that
are in the movie, I am not satisfied with what happened to characters like Zoe and Greg in their
story. It gave me the feeling that I was left hanging. Overall, I enjoyed how it ended where Julia
finally accepted that her research is not a success and it is not necessary to give complex
interpretation in everything that is happening around her.
