The past year and a half has been hard for all of us. It took us by surprise, bringing with it unforeseen
problems and difficulties. A time full of uncertainty and unpredictable things, it forced us to adjust to
a new way of living. While learning to cope with this new reality, one way or another, life as we knew it
was put on hold. We’ve adjusted to a new context, we’ve learned to interact more in the virtual space,
for many of us working from home has become the new normal, the office the exception. Seeing

Now, after a seemingly endless period, when stress was higher than ever before for most of us, we

CLUJ COUNTY
> Cluj-Napoca
Cluj-Napoca, also known as “The Treasure City” or
“The Heart of Transylvania”, is the county seat of Cluj
and the second most populated city in Romania. It
stands out for its festivals, exceptional restaurants,
breweries, and impressive tourist attractions.
Tourists have plenty to see here, from the historical
center, where you can find the Carolina Obelisk, the
Franciscan Church and Monastery, Saint Michael
Roman-Catholic Church, the National Museum
Transylvanian History, the Art Museum, the Matia
Corvin House, as well as the citadel, a fortress built
during the Habsburg period, nowadays turned into a
park that offers a stunning panorama of the city. The
Tailors’ Bastion and the Reformed Church are also a
must see for all those who visit Cluj.
Nature lovers will find a rewarding experience in

> Banffy Castle in Bonțida
Also known as the Versailles of Transylvania, the
castle was built by the Bánffy family in Bonțida.
Originally built in Renaissance style, the alterations
and extensions carried out in the 18th century are
a reflection of the Baroque style, while the 19th
century works are an illustration of the Neoclassical
and Romantic architecture. Visitors can also enjoy
the park and lake behind the castle that offers the
perfect setting for a picnic.

Turda salt mine is one of the most beautiful salt
mines in the world. The wide tunnels of the former
mine are now flooded in spectacular light. Where
the old salt mines once were, now visitors can find
a diversity of recreational areas: an amusement
park, a panoramic wheel from where one can admire
the salt stalactites, dedicated areas for games and
sports, an amphitheater, a spa&wellness area and
several swimming pools.
> Turda Gorge
Stretching over 1,300 m, Turda Gorge is a protected
area of national interest (6 km West of Turda). Here
tourists can enjoy spectacular landscapes, with tall
and steep cliffs, but also over 1000 plant and animal
species.
> Tureni Gorge
Tureni Gorge (Tur or Copand Gorge) is another

The Bride's Veil Waterfall, also known as Răchițele
Waterfall - located in the Valley of Stanciu River, in
Margău - is considered one of the most beautiful
waterfalls in Romania. The water flows over a drop
30 meters high and it freezes during the winter. The
name of the waterfall has its origin in an old legend,
according to which a bride fell off the steep cliffs
above the waterfall and her veil was caught and
remained hanging from the rocks. The waterfall was

Saxon settlers, Sibiu stands out both through its

diversity. Sibiu was designated the European Capital
of Culture in 2007. If you are in the area, make
sure to see the Citadel and its fortified walls, the
Brukenthal National Museum, the Bridge of Lies,
“Astra” Village Museum, the Steam Locomotive
Museum and also the “August von Spiess” Hunting
Museum.
> Bâlea lake
Bâlea Lake is a glacial lake located at an altitude of
2034 m, in the Făgăraș Mountains. The first ice hotel
in Eastern Europe was built near Bâlea Lake in 2006,
in the shape of an igloo that could accommodate 16
people. Such a hotel is now built every year using ice
blocks carved out from Bâlea Lake.

Cisnădioara Citadel was built on top of St. Michael’s

Brașov, another tourist city in Romania, stands
out both though its beauty and its history. A walk
through the streets of the old city will give tourists

these the Black Church - the parish church of the
Lutheran Evangelical community in Brașov. The
Gothic building was partially damaged in the 1689
fire, when its walls turned black, hence its current
name. With a length of 89 meters, the Black Church
is considered the second largest church in Romania,
after the People’s Salvation Cathedral and the
largest Gothic building in South-Eastern Europe.

If you happen to be in Prejmer, make sure to visit the
fortified church, the best preserved and strongest
medieval citadel-church in Eastern Europe. In 1999,

14 Rupea Citadel encloses some of the oldest
archeological finds in Romania, which point at human
settlements dating back to the Paleolithic and the
Early Neolithic Ages (5,500-3,500 BC). The first
documented reference of Rupea is from 1324. Rupea
Citadel is shaped like an ascending spiral, resembling
the shell of a snail.
> Bran Castle
Also known as “Count Dracula’s Castle”, Bran is a
historical and architectural monument located in the
Bran-Rucăr pass, 30 kilometers away from Brașov.
Within its museum visitors can admire a variety of
old collections, from furniture to costumes, weapons
and armors. Around the Bran Castle, tourists
can also see the Royal Park and its two lakes, the
Teahouse, the Steward’s House and Princess Ileana’s
House'.
> Seven Stairs Canyon
For all those in search of thrilling things and enjoy
the adrenaline rush, but also for those who seek
unique natural landscapes, the 7 Stairs Canyon is
an irresistible tourist attraction. This is actually a
gorge in the Piatra Mare Mountains, dug in Jurassic
limestone by a waterfall, reaching an altitude of
about 980 m. 7 metal stairs were built here, for
tourists to climb, their height between 2 , 5 and 15 m.

can also visit the Devil's Pond (Balta Dracului), a
constantly erupting mud volcano.

and La Vaioaga, as well as karstic lakes, such as the

considered the tallest rock sculpture in Europe and
the second in the world. 12 people worked on carving

Brâncuși in Târgu Jiu
The ensemble, which is designed and built by
Constantin Brâncuși, is a tribute to the fallen
heroes of the First World War. The four sculptural
units (The Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss,
the Alley of the Chairs, and the Endless Column)
are arranged along a West to East axis, 1275 m
long. The ensemble can be found on Calea Eroilor,
between the Public Garden and the Endless Column
Park.

Transalpina is a national road in the Parâng
Mountains from the Southern Carpathians. This road
reaches the highest altitude in Romania, exactly
2145 m in Urdele Pass. The road connects Novaci
(Gorj County) with Sebeș (Alba County), crossing a
total of 4 counties: Gorj, Vâlcea, Sibiu, Alba. A drive on
Transalpina is a unique experience, but not an easy
drive, as it constantly snakes and turns. The road is
completely closed during wintertime.

OLTENIA
The Women’s Cave (Peștera Muierilor) is located
in Baia de Fier commune. The caved provided
shelter for many women and children during wars,
when men would leave their homes to go fight,
hence the name. It was the first electrified cave in

Vidra Lake is an anthropic lake built in 1972 and the
largest lake within the Lotru-Ciunget hydropower
complex. It can hold 340 million cubic meters of
water and is 8 km long. Vidra Dam is located on Lotru
River, in Vidra River Gorge, 30 km upstream from
Voineasa Resort. This dam is 121,50 m high and was
built between 1966 and 1973.

The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru),

Located near Oradea, Băile Felix is the largest spa

The Bears’ Cave, near Chișcău, was discovered in
1975, after a blasting at the marble quarry in the
area. The cave stands out through the diversity of
its stalactites and stalagmites formations, as well
as through the numerous traces of fossils belonging
to the cave bear, a species considered extinct more
than 15,000 years ago. Over 1,500 m long, the cave
is composed of numerous tunnels, displayed on two
levels, such as the Bears Tunnel (Galeria Urșilor), The
Candles Tunnel (Galeria Lumânărilor) and the Hall of
Bones (Sala Oaselor).
> Ponor Cave (Cetățile Ponorului)
One of the largest karstic complexes in Romania,

Ponor is included in the Apuseni Nature Park. Also
known as the Everest of Romanian Speleology, it
is actually a cave whose main tunnel is more than

The County seat Fortress of Suceava, part of the
defense system built in Moldavia at the end of
the 14th century, is a citadel on the Eastern side
of Suceava. In the 15th century, the citadel was
reinforced by Stephen the Great, but in 1675 it was
destroyed by Dumitrașcu Cantacuzino, a Moldavian
ruler nicknamed Dumitrașcu of Constantinople.
Visitors can now see only the ruins of the fortress,
but the location provides a wide panorama of the
entire Valley of Suceava.

Daniil Sihastru was a Romanian Orthodox hermit
born at the beginning of the 15th century. He also
was an advisor of Stephen the Great. Looking for
peace and tranquility, the pious Daniil Sihastru went
to an area which was difficult to reach, on the Valley
of Vitau stream, near Putna. He improvized a chapel
there from a cave dug in a cliff. Visitors can now see
the narthex, the nave, and the altar but also another
room, located below, which served as his monastic
cell.

> Ciocănești - the museum village
Ciocănești is the main village of Ciocănești commune
in Suceava County. Legend has it that the name of
Ciocănești comes from the craftsmen of Stephen
the Great, who made weapons for soldiers in
the workshops located there. The village became
popular 60 years ago, when Leontina Țăran decided
to paint her house and decorated it as if it were an
Easter egg. Her house is a museum now and the
tradition of decorating houses like Easter eggs has
spread across the village and it continues to this day.

The Mud Volcanoes at Pâclele Mici, which spread on

Văcărești Nature Park (Văcărești Delta) is a
reservoir in Văcărești neighborhood in District
4 of Bucharest. It stretches over 189 ha and was

of being neglected, the area around Văcărești
lake was reclaimed by nature. The place has many
underground springs, a thriving environment for

In order to mark the quarter of a century that has passed,

we have launched the campaign
‘The METRO Story is YOU. For 25 years.' (Povestea METRO ești TU. De 25 de ani.).
Through this campaign we aim to celebrate all the customers who have been
with us since the beginning or have joined us along the way, seeing in us a

Throughout the years, we have constantly invested resources, technology

we bring forward a new initiative, launching the first edition of ‘Romania:
