CLOCK IN

11:00-11:05 Check-In Question: It’s almost Valentine’s Day! What is your most embarrassing crush/first
date story? Mine is in the second grade when I wrote my crush a secret admirer note and signed my name on
it. Major embarrassment.

11:05-11:10 Debate video. Will project this video on screen. Note the three main parts of a well-rounded
debate!

11:10-11:15 Break students up into 4 teams. We will pick a category for them to debate (sports, music,
movies, etc). Students will discuss which specific topic within the category they want to debate (keep it
appropriate!) and will have to make a case for why their argument is the best.

11:15-11:30 Prepare debate. Take the next 10-15 minutes to think about who will cover what: introduction,
argument/reasons and conclusion. Your debate must be anywhere from 3-5 minutes long. Everyone must
speak!

11:30-11:45 Debate time! Each group will get 5 minutes max to state their case. At the end after all have
gone, will vote on who’s team should “win”. Give feedback to all teams—three things thing you liked about
each debate!

11:45-11:50 Debrief. Even though these were silly topics, this will help you feel more comfortable with
public speaking, arguing in a healthy manner and learning how to hear opinions that you may not agree
with. How do we feel about debating and public speaking?

11:50-11:55 Wrap up. Make any final announcements, ask for final questions and dismiss!

11:55 Dismiss.
