THE DEPARTMENTS

Inventory/ Merchandise Department:

This department of a centralized organization is responsible for managing the goods and services
for its various chain stores. The department ensures that right quality of goods is purchased at
right time that will satisfy ultimate consumers. The merchandise department is usually the largest
department in terms of size and operations.

This department has highly specialized individuals who are expert in the merchandise
management and responsible for investing retailer’s large money into those goods which when
sold, will give good benefit. If we talk about today’s big retailers like Spencer and Tesco &
Marks, were also founded by market retailers.

Social and Digital Media Marketing Department:

Marketing department has the responsibility of market the goods to the consumers. You can
provide a high quality good, offer the goods on low prices but it is the marketing department who
does this responsibility of informing the customers. Marketing department informs the
customers, attract and lure them so that they should come to retail store. In short, marketing
department provides (brings) the customers to the stores.

[5]
Logistics (Distribution) Department:

The logistics department provides retail services to the retail stores and deliveries from suppliers
to retailers which commonly is known as retail supply chain. Retail supply chain includes means
of transportation and storage like warehousing, cold storage, etc. The logistics department in case
of centralized retailing deals with both the buying and merchandising and the marketing
department to ensure that supply chain operations support the product and marketing strategy of
the organization. But in some of retail companies, these both departments are merged. For
instance in the case of bread, butter, milk and other fresh produce because here the timely
logistics of food stuffs is so essential to the long term survival of the retail store.

Personnel Department:

Personnel or human factors are must for Info Traders, even in the case of e- retailing (at the time
of writing/sending supplies). The personnel department (commonly known as HR department) is
responsible for recruitment, selection, training and development of store’s employees at various
levels. HR department ensures that right person should be selected at right position and then the
shortlisted candidate’s information is forwarded to the Head of the respective department that
requires a new employee.

Finance Department:

Finance is the life line of any business. In case of centralized retailing, the regional finance
manager (finance head) take care financial dealings of the store. All payments are made from his
office and all collection of various stores comes to his office. At the independent stores, cashiers
keep record of all financial transactions.

As per the guidelines of regional finance head, they can make some payments with in some
prescribed limit. But these cashiers are supposed to send weekly, monthly or yearly report of all
financial transactions to the regional department.

Communication within Info Traders

[6]
For communication purposes, the company has made a Whatsapp group for every department,
skype calls and messages are very frequent to get in touch with each other across the entire
office. Emails are also highly encouraged especially to get in touch with Department heads.

THE NATURE OF MY WORK

The nature of my work majorly revolved around handling their website’s outlook, I used to go
through the photos selected that were to be posted on the website and their social media
channels, which font looked best on the respective page and some times I was asked to promote
certain content to reach maximum audience. I also used to keep track of the online orders made
per day and what products had been ordered. Following that, I had to make a list of the products
and forward the list to the intern of Inventory Management department for them to double check
and attach receipts.

Moreover, I was also assigned to keep check on where the website traffic was coming from the
most, e.g. which country.

DEVELOPMENT OF EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

I have learnt a number of different skills from working with Info Traders. Amongst all, the most
significant one has to be about me learning how the chain of command works. I learnt to follow
orders and how even a little disobedience can cause issues for the operations of the business. I
also learnt to be punctual and how to talk to professionals both verbal and non-verbal. Moreover,
I also developed a habit of utilizing my time in the most efficient way. My experience with the
company had been extremely useful and I look forward to working with them in the near future.
A number of other skills that I learnt are:

 Management
 Planning and organizational skills
 Communication skills
 Time-management

What are your expectations when taking in APU interns?

From my experience with Ms. Sanya, I would say that APU gets their students ready to enter
the corporate world even before they graduate. They are hard working and their work ethic
is marvellous. I look forward to working with more interns that come from APU.
