Types of
Sports and
Sports Skills

JOHN LEIGHYAR L. BARLAN

SPORTS
SPORTS
Sports is a physical activity that involves the active exertion
of energy and movement of the body. It requires physical
actions and a set of skills and expertise to participate in
sports while following specific rules. Individuals may engage
in sports as solo, duo, or as a team competing against
another. Based on the number of individuals participating,
sports classified as individual sports are those with one
participant on each side, dual sports are those with one pair
on each competing side, and team sports are those with more
than two players on each competing side.

Preparatory Skills to Sport Participation

In order to perform well in the sport a person chooses to engage in, he or she
must know and understand the movement skills involved. Movement skills are
present in every sport, like when we hit a baseball, walking, throwing, and
running around the court. Movement skills involve body parts such as the legs,
arms, torso, and head. These can be simple to complex skills that need to be
used accordingly in any sporting activity and may vary depending on the sport.
The fundamental movement skills locomotors, non-locomotors, and
manipulative are needed for sports participation.

Technical and Tactical Skills Involved in Sports

Technical skills

The fundamentals in playing the game are needed to come up with the
victory. A sound master of these sport-specific technical skills is essential to
efficiently play the game. Through practice, an individual's body performs a
series of actions that helps to cultivate and improve these skills to reach a
higher level. Examples of technical skills are mastering the dribbling,
passing, and shooting techniques in basketball, ball serving, passing,
setting, reception, blocking, attacking or spiking, digging in volleyball, and
performing special tests splinting in athletics.
TACTICAL SKILLS

Tactical skills can be added by practicing or putting the technical skills

learned into action while playing the game. This will enable an individual to
develop decision-making skills and use technical skills during the game. The
tactical skills provide an advantage to a team over the other team. The
strategies in developing these skills depend on the trainer, coach, the team's
talent, or the strength and weakness of the competing squad where one can
take advantage of the competing team's faults. Examples of tactical skills are
quick passing and movement with the ball against a taller but slower
opponent in basketball. In sports language, tactical skills are also known as
game sense
Always Play Safe
It is important that in playing any sport, keeping oneself safe is the first
thing to consider in order to prevent accidents and other injuries.
