Using the SDT Field Leaks Estimato

Disclaimer
Understanding the economical impact of air leaks for a company’s bottom line is not
difficult but finding the real cost in euros of each and every leak can be challenging. The
most challenging exercise is to quantify how much air is flowing through the leak. SDT,
using the best of its knowledge, has developed this field leak estimator to help inspectors to
quantify, with some level of confidence, the cost of these leaks. SDT recognizes there are
many factors affecting the exactitude of these results. SDT also understands that it is at
least better to have approximated values than to have nothing. SDT authorizes the use of
this estimator tool with the mutual understanding that SDT is not liable in any way for the
results obtained. Further, SDT is not liable in any way for decisions made based on the
results obtained from this estimator The use of the SDT’s Field Leak Estimator and any
actions taken as a result remain the sole responsibility and liability of the end user.

Encoding found leaks in the Estimator

Encode dBµV readings for every sensor and distance.

Encode line pressure (choose from 1 to 10 bar).
Only green cells can be completed.
You have at your disposal tabs Flex@40cm, Flex@2m,
ParaDish1@2m and 5m, ParaDish2@2m and 5m.
For each encoded measurement, the tool calculates :
1°) the leaked air volume for each leak in liter/hour
2°) The cumulation of all leaks for each sensor and distance in m³/h
3°) The cumulation of all leaks for each sensor and distance in €/year
based on the cost of compressed air and the number of hours
of operation of compressors

Getting Starting - What Do you need

1. An SDT170, SDT200 or SDT270 ultrasonic measurement device
2. A flexible sensor or / and a sensor with parabolic dish
3. The hours a year that work your compressor
4. The cost per kWh in your company

Calculating the compressed air cost

Encode all information you have available in the "Compressed air cost" worksheet,
or keep the default values :
1°) Energy to produce one m³ of compressed air
2°) The price per kWh
3°) The number of hours of operation of compressors

Summary worksheet
The Summary worksheet summarizes by distance and sensor:
1°) Accumulated losses in m³ / h
2°) Accumulated losses in € / year

Limitations of the "dB SDT" to flow rate converter

The tool is limited to leaks of less than 15000 liters per minute.
Measurements corresponding to higher leak rates and too low measurements
will get a red background in the table.
It is also limited to a network pressure of between 1 and 10 bar.
Calculating the cost of compressed air

kWh/m³ (1) 0.2

kWh cost (2) € 0.081

Hours /year (3) 8700

1000 m³ cost € 17.00

(1) : Energy required to produce one cubic meter compressed air.

On average it is 0.2 kWh for a pressure of 7 bar.

(2) : Price of electricity (excl. VAT) paid to your supplier.

The average price for midsize industrial consumers
(annual consumption of 500 to 2,000 MWh) is 0,081 € excl. VAT in France for 2012
Source: Eurostat

(3) : Annual hours of operation of compressors.

Not to be confused with production hours.
Compressors continue to feed leaks,
even during downtime.
The number of commonly used hours is 6200 hours per year
compressor operation for 5 days per week, round the clock,
and 8700 hours per year for compressor operation
7 days per week, round the clock.
