Backwards Design Lesson Plan Template: Objectives/Outcomes

This lesson plan template is for a lesson about different animals. The objectives are for students to be able to identify various animals and know whether they belong on a farm, in a zoo, or as pets. Students will demonstrate their understanding through a paper test where they must classify pictures of 10 animals into the correct categories of farm, zoo, or pet. The lesson will include singing a song about farm animals, the teacher presenting pictures and sounds of animals while students guess what they are, an activity where students make animal noises to represent themselves, and a final individual assessment.

What key knowledge & skills will students acquire as a result of this lesson?
Students will know: Students will be able to (SWBAT):
● Different kinds of animals. ● Identify those animals where they belong, if
they are living on a farm, zoo, or pet.

Activities
SUGGESTED LESSON ORGANIZATION

10 Mins WARM-UP ACTIVITY: Warm-up Activity: The students will sing Old McDonald Have A
Farm and enumerate the animals mentioned in the song.

10 Mins TEACHER LESSON (I do): The teacher will talk about the different animals. The
teacher will show pictures of the animals and let them follow the sounds of the animals. The
teacher will take turns leading the images and listening to the sounds, and the students will guess
the animals based on the sounds and pictures. The teacher will then ask where these animals
belong: farm, zoo, or pet.

STUDENT ACTIVITY (We do): After teaching the animals and their noises, sit each student in a
different part of the classroom and assign them as different animals (to make it clearer you can
give each student a flashcard of the animal they are representing).

10 Mins STUDENT ACTIVITY (You do together): Walk around the room and talk to each
student, who can only reply as an animal. E.g. Teacher: "Hello Yuri", S1:"Moo! (Cow). Teacher:
"What's your name?" S2: "Roar!" (Lion). Teacher: "How are you, Kenta?" S3: "Hissssss!" (Snake).

10 Mins STUDENT ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY (You do alone): The students will answer in a
paper-pencil test. The students will classify ten animals as farm animals, zoo animals, or pet
