The Practical Project Planning Form

Your investigation: please outline what you are investigating
what is effect of temperature on the oxidation rate of Iodide Ions in Iodine clock reaction.

What areas of chemistry does your project involve (as well explore):
Chemical Kinetics

Write an equation for the chemical reaction you are studying:

H 2 O 2( aq) +2 I −¿ +¿
( aq) +2 H ( aq ) → I 2 ( aq )+ H 2 O ( l ) ¿ ¿

−¿ 2−¿¿
2−¿+I 2 (aq )+→ 2 I ( aq )+ S4 O6 (aq ) ¿¿
2 S 2 O3 ( aq)

Cite two literature value, with both the value and the citation
1- Activation energy at 25 degree Celsius = 52 kJ/mol

Quantitative hypothesis:
Based on principle of kinetics theory, an increase in the temperature of a reaction leads to greater
kinetic energy of particles that would cause frequent collisions between reactants resulting in increase
in the rate of reaction. In addition, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions suggest a stretch toward the
right side, a more energetic area, would cause more particles to surpass the 𝐸a threshold and an increase
in temperature leads to an exponential increase in rate of reaction.

Sketch a table of variables:

Dependent Variable Rate of reaction to calculate rate coefficient
Independent Variable Temperature
Controlled Variable Concentration of reactants (hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide, sodium
thiosulphate)
Concentration of indictor (starch)
pH value (concentration of sulfuric acid)
Pressure (1 AMU)

What will I change: Independent Variable

What will I measure: Dependent Variable
What will I keep constant: Controlled Variables

What was the range values of the independent variable you have been investigating.
Range value interval from 273 K to 330 K

Sketch a graph you expect for your experimental data

The trend of the sketch that your experiment suggests

The trend in the sketch suggests that natural log of rate coefficient is linearly related with inverse of
temperature. This implies that the rate of acid-catalyzed iodination of hydrogen peroxide is
exponentially related with temperature affirming the theory of Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions.

Given that you are expecting a straight-line graph, what would the gradient tell you? How will this get
you closer to a Literature value for comparison?
The Arrhenius equation:
Ea
ln k =ln A−¿ ¿
RT
can be transformed into an equation of straight line y = mx + c , where gradient will provide the value of
(Ea/R). As R is the gas constant (8.315JK-1 mol-1 ), the activation energy Ea can be calculated.

Assessment of Environmental Awareness: You should aim to complete your investigation using the
smallest quantities of materials, and show that you will not waste these, and how you will dispose of
them.
Provide a few short statements to show how you will show Environmental Awareness, in particular in
reducing volume of chemical waste:
I will select the chemicals for my experiment which is less hazardous.
I will use less amount of chemicals to complete my investigation, for which I use in total of 20 mL of
chemicals for one trial. Below 20 mL of volume, it might be difficult to dip a thermometer and note down
the temperature.
I will follow the proper waste disposal procedures. I will clean up the work space and glassware after my
experiment, so that chemical does not spread around.
