GCSE Art and Design Project 1


Theme: Sea Life
   
As a ceramicist you have been asked to contribute work for sale in a new
contemporary craft shop. You are to design a contemporary decorative
ceramic vessel/object inspired by sea life.
 
Preparation work:
Visual Research (AO1 and AO3)
Researching and recording shapes, forms, patterns and colour of sea life
creatures

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐Fill one sheet with tonal drawings of a variety of sea life objects
that incorporate a range of different shapes, forms and patterns.

✐Make four-six colour studies of sections of sea life creatures,


concentrating on recording pattern, texture and colour. Use each
of the following media at once: Watercolour, pencil crayon, oil
pastel, powder paint.
✐Add keywords that reflect the range of different colours, shapes,
patterns and textures of the sea life objects in a decorative and
visually interesting way.

Artist Research and Media Experiments (AO1 and AO2)


Research Kate Malone’s work and experiment with ceramic techniques.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:


✐Produce a research sheet on the work of Kate Malone. Your
sheet must include:
•   Written information about the artist and her work
•   3 x drawing studies (in colour) of examples of her work
•   Found or drawn close up sections of her work
Decorative keywords
✐Experiment with clay techniques. Produce 3 practice tiles in clay
using all of the following techniques:
•   Impressing: drawing/pressing objects into the surface of the

clay
•   Applying: Building on to the surface of the clay using extruded
and hand shaped clay
Combination of both techniques
✐Produce a research sheet that explores a variety of ceramic
objects old and new/traditional and contemporary. You sheet will
include:
•   A collection of thumbnail images of ceramic objects
•   At least 5 tonal drawings of ceramic vessels
Decorative keywords that describe the characteristics of a
variety of ceramic objects
✐Experiment with glazing techniques. Explore different finishes to
add colour to your practice tiles using the following techniques:
•   Oxiding
•   Underglaze

Idea Development (AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4)


Develop a number of ideas based on your visual research and artist studies
for a ceramic object.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

✐Develop at least six initial designs for a ceramic vessel based of


your studies of sea life and Kate Malone. Add colour to each of
your designs and annotate each design explaining how your idea
is inspired by sea life and Kate Malone’s work.
✐Develop a final design for your sea life object/vessel made up
of your favourite/most successful elements of your initial designs.
Your final design sheet must incorporate the following:
•   A drawing of your idea from more than one viewpoint
•   Annotation to describe how you have been inspired by Kate
Malone and sea life
•   A step by step making plan
✐Develop another final design sheet showing colour
experiments/ideas which includes:
•   Adding your final colour choice to a copy of your final design
in pencil crayon
•   Explanations for your final colour decisions and how they
relate to Kate Malone’s work and sea life
•   A plan of how you are going to finish/add colour to your
vessel and which techniques you are going to use

Idea Development (AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4)


Make your ceramic vessel/object, modify and refine work during the making
process. Evaluate your success.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

✐Use your skills and knowledge to create your ceramic vessel


object as you have designed it.
✐Finish/glaze your ceramic vessel/object as you have planned.

✐Produce a detailed evaluation of your outcome. Your


evaluation page must include:
•   Pictures of your final vessel/object
•   A written evaluation that discusses the final structure and
finish of your object, what you changed whilst making your
object and why. Are your inspirations clear?
•   Pictures of sea life creatures/objects and Kate Malone’s work
that show links to your work.
