HOMEWORK 1
3. Provide proper and consistent units for all dimensional quantities. Convert the units if necessary.
Omission or incorrect usage of units will cause grade reduction.
4. Your solution should be readable. Neatness may affect grading.
5. Cite all the references you used for the solution of the problems, such as, tables, figures, appendices, other
books, internet, etc.
6. The following information must be provided on the submitted homework: Name, Last name, ID
number.
Q1) Engine oil is pumped through a pipeline with a diameter of 0.2 m and length of 200 m. The
velocity and inlet temperature of the oil are 2 m/s and 50 oC, respectively. The temperature of the
outside air is 5oC and the heat transfer coefficient between the pipe and the outside air is 30 W/m 2 K.
Evaluate:
(a) the exit temperature of the oil,
(b) the heat transfer from the engine oil
Q2) Consider the flow of water at a rate of 0.01 kg/s through an equilateral triangular channel of sides
by 2cm. The channel is commercial steel (e=46μm) and its walls are kept a uniform temperature of
100oC. Assume the flow is fully developed. Determine:
(a) the channel length required to heat water from 20oC to 70oC,
(b) the required pump power
