PART S WHAT TO SAY:

General A The shift from traditional journalism to digital journalism is an important aspect in addressing the ever-changing need for more relevant
Introduction and more convenient sources and styles of information in this digital age.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the second session of this weeklong DIVISION WEBINAR ON DIGITAL JOURNALISM. I am
Aileen Joy Mora and together with me is The Isabela Chronicle’s news editor and the adviser of the award-winning school paper, The
Antonian Journo, Sir Jose Rafael P. Guiyab.

And together, we will guide you to sudden shift that this pandemic had led us as we will discover how journalism transformed from
educational context to real world practice.  With his session yesterday, Prof. Ben Domingo opened the door for us, as he extensively
engaged us to a comparison of traditional and digital mode of journalism by bringing us the process of news reporting in the non-digital
past to the present as we now call it digital journalism.

You might be asking, where are we leading now? So, stay put as we are going to ride on the same journey, with the same destination but
in different vehicle as we are going to indulge ourselves with the rewards of this pandemic.

Presentation of A And as we proceed, allow me to set your moods and minds by presenting you our session objectives: (Slide)
Objectives So for the knowledge part, you are to differentiate traditional news reporting from digital news reporting; as well as to point out the
similarities and differences of a news and a feature story;
You will be noticing that Sir Rafael and I will be discussing interchangeably; as I will be the one to present the underlying concepts of
news reporting for print media as Sir Rafael will be presenting the trends of digital media focusing on its digital content.

We believe that this strategy will let you immediately understand how the paradigm shift in journalism from educational context to its
real-world application is happening or will gonna happen with the help of our session.

So, gear up for we have also designed affective objectives as you will be able to recognize the importance of shifting to digital journalism
and to evaluate the structure of a news feature for digital media; and with that, towards the end of our session, you are expected to show
your skill by applying the principles of news reporting for digital media.

Presentation of A (Slide)So as we start, let me share with you a data showing the accelerated decline for print as also shared by Mam Julie Ann Gajes on her
Graph and actual session during the Regional Concurrent Session for Schools Implementing SPJ. Obviously, the data were gathered from some countries in
scenario Europe regarding their subscription on print media, that’s either newspaper, magazines and others, and we can see that the decline even
fast-tracked when the COVID 19 hit the world.
(Slide)We also have a data on the projection of newspaper publication in Asia Pacific, still under print media, and apparently, this graph
also implies the same impression to what I have presented a while back. That even before the pandemic, for whatever reasons they have,
there is already an evident indication that people’s appreciation on traditional journalism, specifically the print media is deteriorating.
(Slide)And on this data, as we enumerate the main sources of news, people in all ages give printed newspaper lesser attention as
compared to the percentage presented for online, social media and Television but still somehow being prioritized than radio.
And with these data my dear friends, let us have a short recap if we are guilty or not on our familiarization of the mainstream print media
providers in the country. We will have a short game as you identify the logo or the nameplate of these newspapers with their taglines,
may it be a broadsheet or a tabloid. So, you may just key in your answers on our chatbox as we will ask for the assistance of our
moderators, Sir Kevin and Mam April. Are you ready?

today!
And I guess with that task, we were able to recollect some of our moments with these newspapers. We even visited our school libraries
just to read some of these newspapers and check our daily horoscope or during press seasons when we are required to be updated with
current events since we only have this and broadcast media as TV and radio provide the updates that we need. But as we became teachers
and coaches, information became everywhere as even us, became the sources of information.
Recall through A By the way, as sources of information in these times, what were your initiatives to communicate your school programs and

For the next question, how often do your schools publish a school paper in a school year? (Moderator)
Most of us do it once or twice a year, whether it’s in the form of broadsheet, magazine or newsletter. Now, let’s try to be reflective for a
short while, do you think the stories in your school paper, especially the news stories, are still relevant by the time of publication and
circulation? Why or why not? Again, may I ask you to share your thoughts in our chatbox. (Moderator)
You all got wonderful feedbacks! Truly, the way how we handled traditional journalism are being emphasized with how digital
journalism take the limelight in this unprecedented situation. So, this time, I give you Sir Rafael to bring you back to our present scenario.

And with this result, we want to leave you this question, how does this journalism practice contribute to the development of the school
community as a whole, as it will be answered towards the end of this session.
As we begin with the session, let me show you some tickets how we have started digital media in SDO -Isabela. These are actually news
stories for print media, but due to the restrictions that took place during this pandemic, these articles became the electronic form of our
paper and published in a digital platform. And yes, as Prof.Ben mentioned yesterday, Facebook is an app option for campus journalism.
Keep on listening as we open campus journalism for our district and school information officers and let them embrace the essence of
journalism in digital platforms.

Sir Rafael will further discuss things about information pollution as it is more evident for digital media. But the point here is, whether
you area writing for print or digital media, you must always have an eagle’s eye on the most important facts to be included in your article.

Now, let’s have another flash quiz. Again, just key in your answers on our chat box. Just type the word true or false. Ok?

The presentation of the nut graph or the lead must possess all the elements that is required for a news story. Is this true or false?

Of course, the answer is false! You must just focus on the most important element that will surely hook your audience.
5. How to A If we recall, news for print must be varied since the style we use determines its layout assignment. This time, listen as we are going to
present the treat the fifth question, How to present the acquired information for our article.

and extensiveness presentation of important points in the news story. Again, in the educational context of campus journalism, it is just an
option along with other types of news whether according to style of presentation, content, and place of occurrence. For example, we use
news bits for fillers or in photos if we think we already created a sea of text.

And because of that, here’s another flash quiz. News feature in printed media is written as a follow-up or a sidebar story linked to a news
event. Is this true or false?

Quiz) Still, in writing a news, we do follow the one-sentence paragraph rule but if it could not be avoided, it should not exceed three sentences
as we always adhere with the principle of KISS, to keep it short and simple. So here are the examples.

Considering the majority of audience of print media in our school context, we use simple and familiar words as we opt to be direct by
using active voice as much as possible. Use of verbal deadwoods and adjectives are avoided. Generally, for its language, write in third
person, concise and to the point —just the facts. No more, no less.

Also, in general, our school paper should present stories with objectivity, fairness and credibility. With these mechanics and criteria, let’s
have another flash quiz. Writing a news article in print media provides the writer an option to use past tense for events that have
happened in the past. this true or false?

Of course, the answer is false. Writing for print requires the writer to use past tense.
