CELTA Online Unit 13 Task 11 – Adapting a Practice Activity for Your Class

You will work in pairs/small groups for this task. Your OCT will contact you regarding which pair or group
you are working in. You can contact each other via email, Skype, or stickies.

Questions 1 - 2
1. With your partner choose a practice activity from a coursebook. This might be the coursebook
you are currently using in TP. It is important that you choose an activity which does not suit your
class in some way. It might have one or several of the following problems with it:
1. There might be a mismatch between the target language and the practice activity
2. It might not provide enough variety of practice alongside other practice activities
3. It might contain ‘blocking’ language
4. It might not be communicative
5. It might not be very meaningful
6. It might not be achievable because it requires language your student might not know or
requires too much imagination.
2. Now you should:

Write a description of the practice activity you have chosen

Write a list of issues with it
Decide how you would adapt it for your group.

3. Discuss your ideas with your partner/group.
4. Post a summary of your discussion on the Discussion Forum. You might want to assign different
sections to specific members of the group, so that each person has a chance to contribute to the
process.
