OPEN SOURCE OPPORTUNITIES

For underrepresented groups:


1. Rails Girls Summer of Code: Students receive a three-
month scholarship to work on existing Open Source
projects and expand their skill set. Students need to
participate in a pair along with their coach. The
student applications start in March.
2. Outreachy: It aims to promote participation in open
source through 3 month-long remote internships.
Each intern works on a project under the supervision
of a mentor. Along with a paid stipend, all interns are
given a travel stipend. This program happens
twice a year.

For all:
1. Google Summer of Code: One of the most famous
open-source programs which stretch for 3 months.
Here a student has to work under an organization
under the supervision of mentors. Student
application forms start between February and
March.
2. GirlScript Summer of Code: It aims to help beginners
get started with open source
development. Applications start in February.
3. Hacktoberfest: It is an October month-long
program where students contribute to open-source
software and get a chance to win swags after
completing 4 pull requests.
4. IIT organized winter open-source program: There are
many open-source programs
like NWoC and KwoC which focus on helping
beginners to get started in open-
source. Applications start in November or
December.

For the pre-university students:


1. Google Code-In: It is a contest that introduces
students between 13 to 14 age to open-source
software. This mainly happens in the month of
December and January.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

For Women only:


1. Grace hopper conference scholarship: It is a series of
conferences designed to bring the research and career
interests of women in computing to the forefront. It is
the world’s largest gathering of women in computing
and happens in various locations.
2. Women Techmakers scholarship: This scholarship is
given every year in honor of Dr. Anita Borg’s vision of
creating gender equality in the field of computer
science. The scholarship consists of financial rewards
and a retreat trip to the Google office. Applications
roll out in the month of July.
3. Code Jam I/O for Women: Its a coding competition
where one has to solve algorithmic challenges. Top
150 scorer will get a ticket as well as travel
reimbursement for the Google I/O conference. It
happens in February.
4. Adobe India women-in-technology scholarship:
Scholarship includes mentorship, an opportunity for
Summer Internship at Adobe India, fund toward
tuition fees and travel to Grace Hopper conference
India. Applications start in August.
5. Nutanix.Heart Women in Technology: This
scholarship is for female students in their final year of
undergraduate and pursuing a degree in computer
science, computer engineering, electrical engineering
and computer science or software
engineering. Applications start from November.
6. Western Digital Scholarship for Stem: This
scholarship is provided to female undergraduate
students. They are provided a financial reward. The
application process starts in January.

For all
1. F8 conference scholarship: It is an annual conference
held by Facebook. It consists of sessions and
hackathons. Partial as well as full scholarships are
provided for the conference. This conference
mainly happens in the month of April and
May.
2. Venkat Panchapakesan Memorial Scholarship: This
scholarship is provided to the Indian students who
have used computer science to aspire and help others.
They are provided a financial award along with an
invite to visit Youtube headquarters in San Bruno,
California, USA.
3. Google Conference and Travel Scholarships: This
scholarship is provided to an underrepresented group
for selected conferences. The claimer should be the
primary author of an accepted paper at a top-tier
computer science conference.
4. Udacity Scholarships: The scholarships are over
courses provided by udacity. Like Google Udacity
Scholarship, Bertelsmann Tech scholarship and etc..

PROGRAMMING COMPETITIONS:

For All:
1. Google Code Jam: It is a coding competition where
programmers solve a series of online algorithmic
puzzles through four online-hosted
rounds. Registration starts in March.
2. ACM-ICPC: It is one of the oldest and most
prestigious programming contest in the world. It is a
team contest where each team consists of three
members, a reserve and a coach.
3. Imagine cup(Microsoft): In this students build
inspiring tech projects that tackle some of the world’s
biggest social, environmental, and health
challenges. Registrations start in the month of
January.
4. Kickstart (Google): It is a three-hour-long coding
round that features a variety of algorithmic
challenges. This competition occurs throughout
the year. Top competitors may also be invited to
interview at Google.
5. Hash Code( Google): It is a team-based programming
competition. Here teams have to solve an engineering
problem. Teams have to tackle the first problem
through an Online Qualification Round from a local
hub or another location of their choice. Top teams are
then invited to the Final Round at a Google office.
6. Capgemini Tech Challenge: It consists of different
contests in which a tech enthusiast can participate like
a coding contest, campus challenge, and theme-
specific contest. Registration for this starts in
October.

HACKATHONS:

For Women:
1. Linkedin Wintathon: It is a 24-hour long hackathon
for females in 3rd/4th year Btech or 1st/2nd year
Mtech. The winning team receives a summer
internship with Linkedin Bangalore.

For all:
1. Smart India Hackathon: It is a hackathon initiated by
the Ministry of HRD where students work on
challenges faced within various Ministries,
Departments, Industries, PSUs and NGOs. It consists
of Hardware and Software categories. Each team has
to first qualify an internal hackathon organized in
their college. All members of a team should belong to
the same college.
2. AngelHack Global Series Hackathon: It is one of the
most famous hackathons. Along with an in-person
hackathon, virtual hackathons are also organized.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS:

For Women:
1. Women Who Code Delhi Mentorship Program: It is a
5 week-long program that focuses on providing one to
one mentorship support. Agenda is told every week
and can be modified as per the need of the mentees.

2. Learn IT!Girl!: In this mentorship program, students are part


of a project and they have to complete it with the help of their
assigned mentors.

3. Intuit Augment Program: This mentorship program is


designed to make women industry-ready. There are weekly
sessions on key topics to prepare them for the
industry/placements. Registration happens in January.

For all:
1. Girlsscript Winter Mentorship: Here you can choose a
domain among provided and then you are allotted a
mentor to which you can ask doubts. Registration
happens in December or January.
2. Wootech Mentorship: Here each mentee becomes a
part of a team and they are given a project from
scratch which they have to complete as an open-
source project. Registration happens in
November and December.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS
1. STEP Internship Google: It is a 10 or 12 weeks
internship for 1st and 2nd-year undergraduate
students with a zest for Technology. In this
internship, you work in pairs on projects with
mentors and people in google. The opening of this
opportunity is posted on the careers page of
google.
