Topic vocabulary: Thinking
1. assess (v)
- to carefully consider a situation, person or problem in order to make a judgment (đánh giá, cân nhắc)
Ex: We tried to assess his suitability for the job.

- to calculate what something costs or is worth (tính toán)
Ex: Our agent will assess the value of your property.

2. assume (v)
- to believe that something is true, even though no one has told you or even though you have no proof
(cho rằng là đúng, thừa nhận)
Ex: Everyone accepted she was telling the truth, although in fact this was quite a lot to assume.

3. baffle (v)
- if a problem, someone’s behaviour, etc baffles you, you cannot understand it or solve it (làm khó hiểu)

4. biased (adj)
- preferring one person, thing or idea to another in a way that is unfair (thiên vị)

5. concentrate (v)

6. consider (v)
- to think about something carefully before making a decision (xem xét)
- to have a particular opinion about someone or something (xem như, coi là)
Ex: They consider it inevitable that some jobs will be lost. (2)

7. contemplate (v) /ˈkɒntəmpleɪt/ (rather formal)
- to consider doing something in the future (xem xét, cân nhắc việc gì trong tương lai)
Ex: I’m contemplating retirement next year.
I have never contemplated living abroad.
He continued while she contemplated how to answer.

8. cynical (adj) /ˈsɪnɪkl/


- someone who is cynical believes that people care only about themselves and are not sincere or honest,
or expects things not to be successful or useful/ not believing that something good will happen or that
something is important (hoài nghi)
Ex: a cynical view/ smile
I'm a bit cynical about the benefits of the plan.
Her experiences with men have made her thoroughly cynical about love.

9. deduce (v) /dɪˈduːs/ (formal)


- to know something as a result of considering the information or evidence that you have (kết luận)
Ex: Finding fossils far inland, he deduced that the area had once been covered by water.

10. deliberate (v) /dɪˈlɪbəreɪt/


- to think about or discuss something very carefully, especially before you make an important decision
(cân nhắc kỹ càng)
Ex: The judges deliberated for an hour before choosing the winner.

11. discriminate (v)


- to treat someone unfairly because of their religion, race or other personal features (phân biệt đối xử)
Ex: Employers are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of gender.

12. dubious (adj)
