1. Given below is news article that appeared in Daily FT on Friday, 10 September.
Customs officers told to be extra vigilant
Sri Lanka Customs Director General Major Gen. (Retd.) G.V. Ravipriya has instructed
his team to be extra vigilant to ensure banned or suspended items don’t reach the country.

In an order issued on Wednesday, Ravipriya has told his officers that goods, which were
currently suspended or banned under the Imports and Exports Control Act, were being
released through unaccompanied passenger baggage warehouses in the guise of bona-
fide passenger baggage or gifts.

The officers have been advised not to release any goods which are temporarily suspended
or banned under the regulations and imported as bona-fide unaccompanied passenger
baggage or as gifts with immediate effect.

Write a memorandum to your Director General of Customs highlighting the limitations


and problems that you encounter as a member of Sri Lanka Customs, in carrying out what
is stated in the above newspaper article as well as in general, in carrying out your general
duties as an employee of Sri Lanka Customs. Word count should be between 500 - 750
words. (30 marks)
