PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
ASSIGNMENT NO 1

First, I am happy that it is unlikely that I will get into situation like this in my real life. Given that
there is total 10 people and only 6 of them can get lifeboats, I will apply the Principle of
Utilitarianism. According to this principle, one should try to follow the approach which can
benefit more people in society, and before taking decision one should be fully informed about the
consequences.

I will save the pregnant women because she is carrying another life within her, and hence
indirectly, I will be saving two lives by saving her.

I will be saving Veteran Surgeon, he/she is the person who has saved many lives and have long
experience in his field. His/her knowledge can help the younger doctors as well. Hence his life is
precious, and I will allow him to stay in lifeboat.

I will save Prominent Professor at university. Her/His knowledge has enlightened many peoples’
life, he/she has given his/her whole life to students not to only teach them bookish lessons but
also helps them to learn life lesson. Hence his life is valuable, his/her life experience can help
people to love learning and to get themselves engage in the chasing of knowledge.

I will be saving newly married couple, as their new life has just started. And If I save any one of
them then second person will always stay in pain and two families will be destroyed because of
their death. Hence, I will save them.

I will save one of the twin girls. As, I only have single space left, I will give it to one of them.
Their parents will be in pain because of one girl but because of the other twin they will be able to
suffer this pain.
I will not save myself, As the people I want to save are more knowledgeable and I find their lives
more precious and valuable.

I will not save a senior citizen, as he/she has lived many years. And he/she will not be sad to
sacrifice his/her life for other people.

I will not save lifeguard as his main work is to help swimmers who get into difficulty at a
swimming pool, so in between sea he will not be able to help people.
