UNIT II: THE SCHOOL AS A SOCIAL INSTITUTION

AS WE ALL KNOW, THE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS ESTABLISHED BY SOCIETY TO
ADDRESS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND TO KEEP EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES GOING FOR THE
MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY. THE SCHOOL, AS AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION, PROVIDES STUDENTS: TO
ACQUIRE INFORMATION, COMPETENCE, AND ATTITUDE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE EDUCATIONAL
SYSTEM'S GOALS AND PRINCIPLES. THERE IS A TIGHT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SCHOOL'S GOALS
AND SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS AND IDEALS. THE SOCIETY INFLUENCES SCHOOLS, AND THE SCHOOL
INFLUENCES SOCIETY BY ITS OUTPUTS.
AS A RESULT, SOCIETY AND SCHOOL CAN BE VIEWED AS TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN.
A. THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL AS A SOCIALIZING AGENT
BUT FIRST WHAT DOES SOCIALIZATION MEANS?
SOCIALIZATION IS THE PROCESS THROUGH WHICH A PERSON LEARNS TO FIT INTO A GROUP (OR
SOCIETY) AND ACT IN A WAY THAT THE GROUP APPROVES OF (OR SOCIETY).
ASIDE FROM THE FAMILY, THE SCHOOL IS THE SECOND MOST IMPORTANT AGENT OF SOCIALIZATION.
THE FORMAL OBJECTIVE OF EDUCATION, OF COURSE, IS TO CONVEY SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND TEACH
LIFE SKILLS LIKE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS AND MEETING DEADLINES. ON THE OTHER HAND, STUDENTS,
DO NOT JUST LEARN FROM THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM CREATED BY INSTRUCTORS AND
ADMINISTRATORS. WE DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS AT SCHOOL THROUGH INTERACTING WITH
INSTRUCTORS, STAFF, AND OTHER STUDENTS.
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE SCHOOL IN SOCIALIZING STUDENTS
 Through the hidden curriculum, schools act as a socializing agent. It is the process of establishing
in children the societal standards and values, as well as the expectations of their own society.
 Socialization is the process of learning how to become part of a culture. IN SCHOOLS One learns
the language of the culture, their function in life, and what is expected of them through
socialization. Socialization is a crucial step in the development of a person's personality. When
one interacts with other individuals, it happens.
 Schools aid in the integration of a varied people into a single society with a common national
identity, as well as the preparation of future generations for their civic responsibilities. Civic
teachings teach students understand laws and our political system, and traditions like saluting
the flag teach patriotism.
 When students make decisions and take activities that drive them toward their educational
goals, they are demonstrating student responsibility. The following behaviors are displayed by
responsible students who accept responsibility for their activities. They exhibit intellectual
honesty and integrity.
THE SCHOOL AND THE COMMUNITY
THE COMMUNITY
A community is a social unit OR GROUP OF PEOPLE that shares certain characteristics such as norms,
religion, values, practices, or identity.
The school-community RELATION is a mutual understanding in which the school and the community
collaborate to achieve the community's and school's goals. The optimal functioning of a school as a
social institution is dependent on functional interrelationships within it and with its associated
communities. A problem at a school has an impact on the community, just as what happens in the
community has an impact on the school. As a result, the relationship between the school and the
community is highly interdependent.
Types of School-Community Relations
1. Parenting - The child's parents are both the school and the community. The community,
particularly the family, ensures the health and safety of the kid, as well as a home setting that promotes
learning and healthy habits. The school, on the other hand, helps the child grow his or her knowledge
and abilities while also providing information to the family on the child's performance, progress, and
behavior development to help them understand and support their child.
2. Communication - The school must communicate with families on school programs and
student reports, as well as fresh information on topics such as school choice and transitioning from
elementary to HIGHER LEVELS.
3. Volunteering - Parents may make a huge difference on a school's environment and functions.
4. Learning - Family members can supervise and assist their children at home with
homework assignments and other school-related activities with the advice and assistance of instructors.
5. Decision-making - Parents can be given significant roles in the decision-making process at
school, and parents can be given training and information to help them make the most of those
possibilities.
6. Collaboration - Schools can assist families in gaining access to other agencies' support services,
such as health care, cultural activities, tutoring, and after-school child care.
Areas of School - Community Relationship
The areas of school-community relationships refer to those areas where the school and community may
collaborate for mutual benefit.
1. Use of School or Neighborhood Facilities
2. Sharing Other Resources
3. Collaborative Fund Raising and Grant Application
4. Volunteer Assistance
5. Mentoring and Training
6. Information Sharing and Dissemination
The Role of the Teacher in School-Community Relations
The role of the teacher in a positive school-community relationship is critical, since the teacher is the
educational system's backbone (Nebor, 1984).
Teachers' purpose is to support students in learning by transferring knowledge and creating an
environment in which students can and will learn efficiently.
Teachers also implement school policy, and make the best possible impression in even the most
innocuous of situations in order to maintain public support.
They also state that, teachers collaborate with students, other teachers, school officials, families, and
community members to ensure their kids' academic achievement and healthy growth.
