1. Sorting fruits and vegetables activity (done in small groups)

 Take to the classroom a variety of fruits and vegetables of different sizes,

textures, and colors
 have students hold and feel the vegetables/fruits for texture, smell them and
observe colour and characteristics
 Discuss how the fruits and vegetables are the same and how they are different
 discuss different ways the fruits and vegetables could be sorted (size, texture,
colour, etc.)
 Have each group sort the fruits and vegetables in some way and explain how they
have sorted them
 record the results in a poster/make graphics. (math connection)
 help students associate fruits and vegetables with color.
 Write the following color words on the board/present cards with the following
colours: blue, green, purple, white, red yellow, and orange. Present pictures of fruits
and vegetables and have students put them in the right color group.
 Talk about fruits and vegetables that come in different colors, such as peppers
(red, green, yellow) and grapes (green, pink, purple).
they can also classify fruits and vegetables by the part we eat – for example,
bananas are part of the white group becausewe eat the white fruit, not the yellow
skin.

Examples: Blue/Purple – Blueberries, Eggplant; Green –lettuce, grapes, Cucumber,

Peas; White – Banana, Pear, Yellow/Orange – Lemon, Carrot; Red – Tomato, Radishes.

2. Science lesson on a fruit being the part of a plant that holds the seeds.

 Cut the fruits, etc. open and investigate the insides. Look for seeds.
 Have students record what they find inside the fruit. (number/size/colour of
seeds) (remember: strawberries, have the seeds on the outside. )
 Have students count how many seeds they find
 Talk about the parts of plants (roots, stem, leaf, etc.) and which is the function
of the fruit (is the part that has the seeds for new plants).
 Talk about the seeds (how they grow, get transported, shape, characteristics.)
 Take different seeds and make them sprout. record changes

1. Have students find pictures of fruits in magazines/newspapers. Make a collage.

Discuss benefits of eating vegetables. (Better health, prevent cancer).
2. Mystery fruit- game. Make a poster with cut-outs and have children make
questions to guess the vegetable behind the question mark. (mandar un poster con las
frutas dibujadas o frutas dibujadas y signos de pregunta para tapar las frutas tipo
ventanitas que se puedan levantar.)
3. Have students write/draw cards telling the benefits of eating fruits and
vegetables
4. Make a bulletin board display for your classroom. You may want to make a rainbow
with the different colours of fruits.

Fotocopiables: dibujar un laberinto donde se muestre el proceso de la fruta desde que

cae la semilla hasta que llega a la mesa. El punto de partida sería el granjero plantando
las semillas y el final sería la mamá comprando en la verdulería. Puntos: plant the seeds-
the first leaves-la semilla creciendo, the tree-el arbolito, blooming- la floración, the
fruit-el fruto, collecting the fruit-la recolección, the transportation -el transporte a
granel, packaging and loading-el envasado y the grocery la verdulería.
