Ed Bickert Chord Phrases

Chord Phrase #1

Audio Example

The voicings feature a combination of clusters and 4ths intervals, giving a very rich
and full sound.

Chord Phrase #2

Audio Example

Notice the cool tensions used in this line. Also, a common chordal technique is to
reharmonize m7 chords to dominant 7. Note that this could clash with another
harmony instrument (e.g. piano) but if you just have bass & drums in the rhythm
section you have the freedom to do this, it can give a cool “lift” to the band.

Chord Phrase #3

Audio Example

This lick features the effective use of space in a comping phrase. Letting the chords
“breathe” while you comp is the hallmark of an experienced jazz player.

Chord Phrase #4

Audio Example

This lick uses the iiim7 (Am7) as a substitution for chord IMaj7 (FMaj7). This is an
easy sub that results in the upper extensions on chord IMaj7 being targeted. Also
notice the smooth voice leading as the chords amble down the guitar neck.

requires quite a stretch but it’s worth it for the excellent voice leading.
