make full preparation for installation.

2.2 On-site investigation

2.2.2 Preparation of shaft way
All inspections must be done in accordance with the requirements of construction design
drawings!
1) Shaft way shall be checked, and horizontal line and center line of the finished floor shall be
clearly marked (done by the employer).
2) Distance between the two terminal supports, and length, depth, lifting height of the pit, length
of shaft way’s diagonal (deviation between the diagonals shall not exceed 40mm) shall be
checked.

2.2.3 Count and storage of materials
1) Before lifting the escalator (or moving walk), accessories such as internal and external cover
plate placed inside, handrail guide rail shall be transported to the temporary warehouse;
2) After unloading the escalator, it is necessary to check if the package is complete to prevent
dust and other sundries from going into the escalator;
3) Installation materials in the wooden boxes shall also be transported to the temporary
warehouse;
4) All accessories shall be counted in line with invoice, stacked and stored properly. Please
contact after-sale service department in time if defects are found in accessories to avoid

Chapter 8 Use and maintenance

Special techniques are needed in maintenance and service of escalator (or moving walk), only the
company and person who are permitted by the state and with appropriate qualification can
implement maintenance and service.
8.1 Safety protective measures of maintenance
a) In the period of maintenance, repair or inspection and test, protective measures shall be taken
to make sure that escalator (or moving walk) cannot be started without being noticed and
getting permission of professional;
b) When having maintenance, obstacles or sign which says “ongoing maintenance” shall be set
in the upper and lower entrances of escalator (or moving walk);
c) If step (or pedal) needs to be dismantled, only inspection switch can be used to operate;
d) If inspection and repair are happened in the guide rail of escalator (or moving walk) or other
places which may cause damage to human when escalator (or moving walk) starts suddenly,
main power switch must be cut and locked, care shall be given by special personnel or sign
gives notice to ensure personal safety;
e) Do not start escalator (or moving walk) with load.
8.2 Maintenance and maintenance period of escalator (or moving walk)
a) After escalator (or moving walk) put into use for 3 months, a careful inspection and

month, accumulated oil in oil-water separator of lower machine room shall be cleaned if it is
in the outdoor;
d) Check if all steps are loose or not (clamp ring is loose, step moves left and right) each time
escalator running for 1 month; adjustment and fixation shall be done if they are loose;
e) Check if all bolts of fixed pedals are loose or not each time moving walk running for 1 month,
adjustment and fixation shall be done if they are loose;

8.3 Disassembly of floor plate

Floor plate shall be dismantled if maintenance personnel want to enter into the machine room of
escalator (or moving walk). Use special to screw into screwed hole which is in the surface of floor
plate to lift floor plate. Also check if reinforcing rib of floor plate has welding off, overall
deformation or damage.
8.4 Disassembly of step (or pedal) chain
Step (or pedal) chain needs to be dismantled if step (or pedal) chain is over worn, several rollers
are damaged or escalator (or moving walk) needs overhaul. In unnecessary circumstance, step (or
pedal) shall not be dismantled generally.
8.4.1 Disassembly of step (or pedal) chain (build-in roller)

c) Dismantle connecting chain plate;
d) Beat slightly the chain plate of short pin, and take it out;
e) Use a special axis to beat sleeve and separate it from the chain;
f) Take roller out.

d) Dismantle spring pin and short axis;
e) Use drawing die to pull roller out;
f) Use moulding die to press new step roller in its place
g) Load short axis, spring pin and long axis, use bolt to fix long axis;
h) Load step.
8.5 Tension check of step (or pedal) chain
Check step (or pedal) chain in lower machine room of escalator (or moving walk), pressure spring
shall be compressed to proper length X: 150~160mm.
Tension of two step (or pedal) chains shall be uniform, adjust length of two springs properly, to
ensure the intimacy of escalator. Intervals between two contacts of safety protective switch and
flitch shall be adjusted according to the drawing.

8.6 Lubrication of step (or pedal) chain
Lubricate manually the step (or pedal) chain at the first time of using escalator (or moving walk)
after installation. This work shall be done in the lower machine room. Check and operate to make
escalator (or moving walk) move upward, use oil can and brush to lubricate chain piece, and
prevent roller contacting oil as far as possible.

8.7 Tension and lubrication of main drive chain

When escalator (or moving walk) has no load, main drive chain shall have a sag of 5~10mm. Or
the four bolts in the fixed traction machine can be loosened, use wrench to turn tension bolt to
adjust the tension degree of drive chain and then lock screw tightly. Inspection control makes
escalator (or moving walk) move downward, oil can or brush is used to lubricate main drive chain.
8.8 Tension and lubrication of handrail drive chain
Handrail drive chain is between main axis of step (or pedal) drive and main axis of handrail. After

- 47 -

dismantling 4 steps (or pedals), move opening to front of upper comb plate and use this opening to
check or tighten drive chain. Loosen eight fixed bolts of flange bearing in the handrail belt drive
axle, and adjust left and right tension bolts uniformly to make sag of handrail drive chain which
has no load is 5~10mm, then tighten fixed bolt.
After dismantling 3 steps (or 6 steps), move opening to upper part of handrail drive chain, shut off
power, and use brush to lubricate handrail drive chain.
8.9 Tension and lubrication of end drive chain of handrail belt
Use bolt to adjust heights of two transitional chain wheels to adjust tension degree of end drive
chain of handrail belt. Make chain sag keep 5~10mm in no-load condition and tension degree of
two left and right chains keep uniformly.
Inspection control makes escalator move upward, and oil can or brush is used to lubricate chain.
8.10 Check and lubrication of step guide block
Check friction condition of step guide block in lower machine room of escalator, guide
components must be changed if they are damaged seriously (wearing loss reaches 1.2mm) because
this will make step hit guide rail and rub with skirt panel also. Lateral interval between skirt panel
and guide components shall be no more than 0.5mm, if necessary, you can adjust skirt panel or
correct step which has changed its place. Add lubricating grease into groove which is in the front
of step guide block.
8.11 Inspection of oil level of reducer
Pull oil scale out to check oil level. Oil shall be added within the scale range of oil scale if it is
necessary. Profession shall carry out maintenance if there is an oil leakage in reducer.
8.12 Inspection of auxiliary brake
After inspection and adjustment, all the moving parts of auxiliary brake shall move correctly,
flexibly, reliably; interval between drop pawl and face of brake block is generally about 10mm in
normal condition.

8.13 Maintenance of step (or pedal) guide rail

Step (or pedal) guide rail shall be cleaned completely. Cleaning work is finished in the opening of
step (or pedal). At the moment, inspection switch shall be used to give staged operation of
escalator (or moving walk), protective button and main power switch shall be stopped while
cleaning.
8.14 Clean of handrail belt
Use rag which is stained with few handrail belts cleaner to clean surface of handrail belt till the
surface shines, then use a dry rag to rub it dry.
8.15 Maintenance of safety device
Check sensitivity and reliability of safety device frequently, adjust position of safety switch if it is
necessary, and change unreliable safety switch timely.
