About the
Origami Collection
The Origami Collection was born in 1980 from ideals
fostered by the founding members of OrigamiUSA. Michael
Shall (1949-1995) launched this yearly anthology to share
origami models from around the world. His mentor, Lillian
Oppenheimer (1898-1992), provided the springboard
for this effort, as many of the models were drawn from
her collection and connections she cultivated. Alice Gray
(1914-1994) also provided inspiration by streamlining
the communication of origami ideas. All of the novice-level
works in this collection are dedicated to Alice and her love
of simple, elegant pieces.

Throughout the years as our presentation has grown more

polished, the goal of showcasing great origami has not
diminished. The editors of the Origami Collection spend
many hours curating, testing and editing origami designs
to produce a book that will appeal to origami aficionados
of all levels and interests. Variety is a key criterion; you will
find works here by established origami artists as well as
many hidden gems from up-and-coming stars. Most of
the pieces are making their debut in these pages. We hope
you are as excited about discovering these diagrams as
we are in presenting them.

Paper: you need a square of at least 50cm in size of thin

and strong paper.
Sandwich paper (tissue + aluminium) could be a good
choice. You may have better results using higher quality
papers (quite thin and if necessary treated with MC) and
wet-finished.

This is not your traditional flat-folded model. The basic fold in this model is the couplet or flange, consisting of
an intrinsic straight crease and an intrinsic curved crease. The design is 4 repetitions of a combination of such
flanges rotated with equal angle apart around the center of the square paper. The curved surfaces on the
completed model is the result of the curved crease folding.

The model is folded from a crease pattern. Use a 25 cm x 25 cm square paper for a live-size rose. 4 squares
of this size can be cut from a B2 size paper. Recommended paper thickness is 110-145 gsm.
There are two ways of folding. The first is to score of the crease pattern on the paper and fold. The second
is first print the crease pattern on a sheet of copy paper. Stick this on the paper to be folded using rubber
glue. (Apply glue only on the copy paper.) Fold the two papers as one. Then unfold, remove the copy paper
and refold the model. Rubber glue can be easily removed by rubbing.

1. First, crease all the thicker lines.
