Comparative Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Create a suit from Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue" text and this scene from the movie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_CJXuMxc8U "Crazy Rich Asians" and find out how

identity and language affect people.

Amy Tan, the author of "Mother Tongue," brings out her thoughts and emotional state

about the meaning and use of English to her mother. Her mother "broke" English, which meant

she was not good at speaking, expressing herself, and understanding English. "This is a fact for

me because when I was growing up, my mother 'limited' English limited my understanding of

her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she

was saying. There is a lot of empirical evidence that people in department stores, banks, and

restaurants did not take her seriously, did not serve her well, pretended not to understand her,

or did not listen as they did (Amy Tan). Generally, it could have worked her up and maybe

messed with her self-esteem. Alternatively, she might have made peace with it and was

comfortable with what happened to her communication skills. This indicates that her mother's

limited English-speaking skills directly affected the way other people treated her and perceived

her.

In "Crazy Rich Asians," Rachel and Eleanor play Mahjong, and Mahjong talks about

Rachel's identity.

Eleanor: "There is a hockey sentence. Ka Ji lawn. It means 'our own.' You are not our

person".

Raphael: "Because am I rich? Because I never went to a British boarding school or was I

born into a wealthy family.".

Eleanor: "You are a foreigner. American. All Americans think about their happiness."

Eleanor has personal views and stereotypes about Americans, especially those who are selfish

for their pleasure. Rachel's identity as a Chinese-American Eleanor influences feelings about
her. Eleanor did not accept the relationship between Rachel and Nick. Rachel does not like to

be separated from her family because she is American, not part of their culture or family. Their

family is proud to be Chinese. It shows your cultural identity and how others treat you, and how

you feel about them. One of the cultural identity is the language that one speaks. The diversity

on this has continued for a long time, and people easily identify one's background through the

language they are fluent in and more so the accent while they speak.

Each context speaks of culture and language. The two are connected because the

language you connect with may be contrary to your cultural identity. Crazy Rich Asians talk

about their mother tongue while highlighting their culture. Rachel is a Chinese-American, Amy's

mother's 'broken' English, and refers to the level and ideas with which others see and influence

thoughts and feelings. Some feel like mixing themselves in another language leads to loss of

culture and will insist that they retain their language. Other people feel that more language is

their culture, and the only thing that defines them, which is true since the first thing that defines

one's culture is what they speak.

There are different views and typecasts about language, religion, race, identity, etc.,

particularly in the United States. People are very prejudiced; there is always a bit to be said;

there are many judgments on people and the whole thing. Being Chinese and American in itself

presents different stereotypes and ideas that other people contemplate and speak. The two

countries are categorized differently, and there is a power fight since America thinks the

Chinese language is overtaking the world. There are so many foreign languages taught in

school, promoting what a particular nation thinks is best for them. It is hard for one to speak the

language of another culture and not practice at least some of their cultural activities. This is why

Americans will not accept mixing, especially blood, with Chinese the same as Chinese mixing

with Americans. For example, usually Chinese or Asian means you are smart. From Crazy Rich

Asians, Eleanor has a template about Americans that influence her thoughts and feelings about

Rachel. They think Americans are selfish and focus only on their happiness. The reason why
she is skeptical about Rachel is joining her family. In other words, you could see that she thinks

welcoming an American in their family will dilute their culture.

Amy speaks the words her mother used to indicate her use of English in her native

language. "Recently, I have been thinking more about the English my mother speaks. Like the

others, I described it as 'broken' as it was damaged and needed to be fixed, as it lacked a

wholeness and good power. For example, I heard other words used in 'limited English.' They

feel so bad because everything is limited, including public perceptions about the limited English

speaker" (Amy Tan). The template and position of Mother of the Earth representing English are

broken or limited. It is not fully understood in English, and it affects the opinions of others and

how they view Mother Earth. The mother directly translates words from her original language to

English, and since English is the language that her child leans, she likely passes the same

accent to the child. The broken English she speaks has made the world perceive her differently.

Both texts provide evidence of the level of culture and language represented in the texts and

how other people respond.

The whole message of Crazy Rich Asians is that personal status or their identity should

never be entertained to come between people's relationship and love. The scene supports the

message that Rachel has set herself contrary to Eleanor. According to her, her identity, status

background, and Nick's status background should not be an issue since her love for Nick is

what the most important thing is. Similar to what people who support intermarriage's perceived.

There is a strong perception that love conquers all, so long as people love each other, then all

other factors, which could separate them, are invalid. She leaves Nick since she does not want

to continue making things work, which her mother, Eleanor, agrees. She knows she deserves to

be right, not just to impress someone. "I'm not going, because I'm scared or I think I'm not good

enough, because I know I've been there for the first time in my life. I love Nick so much. I do not

want him again. It shows that it's acceptable to them. Explains." I wanted to capture what

language proficiency tests can never reveal: her purpose, her passion, her images, the rhythm
of her speech, the nature of her thoughts. In her talk with her mother, such issues are silent and

can only be expressed through action. "Her use of her mother tongue, 'broken' or 'limited,' her

use of language, which shows who she is, her passion, and how she thinks. Thoughts and

comments against her mother's use of English and the words that refer to it. How she uses her

English is a direct translation of her background and exposure. Her expression is that she has

tried all she can, but since when is not able to express herself with the right English terms, she

is misquoted, and the language barrier between them leads her to give up on the relationship.

She is aggressive and would like to speak in English, as it is her passion. Cultural identity and

the use of a specific language becomes a personal matter for her when she is rejected. The two

cannot be controlled. Self-expression is a cultural identity, language, the public opinion of the

individual, and their self-expression should be irrelevant, and I should not be considered as self-

expression.
