Reflection Luke 3:10-18

Today is the third Sunday of Advent. The story focuses on a young child who was
persuaded by his father that the only route to happiness is to amass wealth. He
absorbed his father's instructions, so he studied extremely well and soon became
one of the town's very wealthy. But even though he was extremely wealthy, he
remained dissatisfied.

As a result, he turned to a wise elderly man for counsel. The wise old guy just had
one piece of counsel for him: learn to share whatever you have since it is in
sharing that you will discover the illusive joy and contentment that you seek. He
followed the wise advice, and he finally found the joy and contentment he was
looking for. In our gospel, the masses questioned John the Baptist, "What should
we do?" John replied, "Whomever has two cloaks should share with the person who
has none, and whoever has food should do the same." Perhaps John observed the
throng was already becoming self-centered. They were solely concerned with their
own interests and never with the needs of their fellow citizens. As a result, John's
suggestion to give.

Christmas isn't about what we'll get. It is about what we can offer, not what we can
receive, since the true meaning of Christmas is in giving, not receiving. Let us
attempt to share totally, and we will experience a level of delight and satisfaction
that we will not be able to experience when we get presents.
On this third Sunday of Advent, John the Baptist's message is clear: learn to
share, no matter how little, as long as it comes from the bottom of our hearts. Let
us contribute to the poor, to those in need, and to those who cannot repay our
charity. There are a lot of them. For example, the poor and homeless people we see
on the street. Those who are ill, especially those who have been ill as a result of
covid-19. Let us give without expecting anything in return, so that we can
experience the genuine joy and contentment that only Jesus can provide.
