6 Practise these conversations.

Conversation 1 Mike is looking for a flat for rent. He phones the landlady.

Mike Hello. My name’s Mike. I hear you have a flat to let.


Landlady Yes. What kind of flat are looking for?
Mike I’m interested in a one-bedroom.
Landlady Fine. I have a one-bedroom flat on the first floor of my house.
Mike What can you tell me about it?
Landlady Well, it’s a studio with a big bedroom, a private bathroom and a small kitchen. It’s
close to the city centre. The monthly rent is $550, with a $300 deposit. You pay
electricity only. Gas and water is included.
Mike That’s quite expensive. It’s furnished, isn’t it?
Landlady It’s not fully furnished. There’s a double bed and a cupboard.
Mike Is it in a quiet surrounding?
Landlady Yes, it is. It’s a very quiet place, and the neighbours are quiet and friendly.
Mike Sounds great. I hope it’s safe?
Landlady Of course it is safe.
Mike Can I come and have a look tomorrow at 9 am?
Landlady Yes, you can. I’ll be there all morning.

Conversation 2 Tom’s mum has had enough of him. It’s late in the morning and he’s still in bed.

Mum Tom, see your room. It’s very dirty and it’s a mess.
Tom Mum. It’s not dirty, and it’s tidy. I’m sleepy. Please leave me.
Mum Tom, it’s very late in the morning. You mustn’t be so lazy, honey.
Tom I’m not lazy. I’m ill. I have a temperature.
Mum [Feeling his neck] You do have a temperature. Let’s go to the doctor, and
get an injection!
Tom No, no. I’m afraid of injections.
Mum They’re very painful, aren’t they? But if you have a temperature, you have to get an
injection.
Tom Sorry, mum. I’m not ill. I’m tired.
Mum Why are you tired?
Tom I’ve been playing computer games all night.
Mum You kept awake all night? It’s bad for your health. Now, have your breakfast.
