LIGHT NOTES

Q1. Define the propagation of light?

Ans. “Light travels in a straight line” is the propagation of
light.
Q2. Enlist the characteristics of plane mirrors.
 The image formed in plane mirrors is erected.
 Size of object and image is equal.
 The image formed at the same distance behind the
mirror as the object in front of the mirror.
 The image formed in the mirror is laterally inverted.
Q3. Define reflection of light.
Ans. When a beam of light falls on a polished surface, it
changes the direction of light. This is known as the
reflection of light.
Q4. What makes things visible to us?
Ans. When light reflected from polished surface reaches our
eyes, it makes objects visible to us.
Q5.What is an erected image.
Ans. The erected image is one that appears right side up.
OR
It is an image in which directions are the same, as those in
the objects.
Q6. Why is the word AMBULANCE written in a strange
manner on the ambulance?
Ans. When the driver of a vehicle is ahead of an ambulance
looks in his/her rear view mirror, he/she can read
AMBULANCE written on it.
Q7. Differentiate between real and virtual images.

Always inverted. Always erect.

Q8. Define spherical mirrors and list the two types of the
same.
Ans. Spherical mirrors are the mirrors whose reflecting
surface is the part of a hollow sphere of glass. The two
types of spherical mirrors are concave and convex mirrors.
Q9. Define concave mirrors
Ans. The reflecting surface of spherical a mirror is concave
or inside.
Q10. What kind of image is formed by concave mirror?
Ans. The nature and size of the image formed by concave
mirrors depends on the distance of the object from the
concave mirror. A concave mirror can form a real and
inverted image. When the object is placed very close to the
mirror, the image formed is virtual, erect and magnified.
Q11. What is diverging lens?
Ans. When a concave lens diverges (bends outward) the
light and is called a diverging lens.
Q12. Write the uses of concave mirror.
Ans. Doctors to examine ears/nose use concave mirrors.
Dentists use to see enlarged image of the teeth. The
reflectors of torches and headlights of cars are concave in
shape.
Q13. Define convex mirrors.
Ans. The reflecting surface of spherical a mirror is convex or
outside.
Q14. What kind of an image is formed by a convex mirror?
Ans. The images formed by convex mirrors are always
erected, virtual and smaller than that of the object.
Q15. What is a converging lens?
Ans. When a lens converges, (bends inward) the light and is
called a converging lens.
Q16. What are the uses of a convex mirror?
Ans. Convex mirrors are used as rear view mirrors in
vehicles.
Q17. Why are convex mirrors used as rear view mirrors in
vehicles?
Ans. It can form image of the object spread over a large
area.
Q18. Differentiate between convex and concave lenses.

Q19. Name the colors included in the composition of

sunlight/white light.
Ans. The colors included in the composition of
sunlight/white light are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue,
Indigo and Violet.
Q20. Define the dispersion of white light.
Ans. The splitting up of white light into seven colors when
pass through a transparent medium is known as the
dispersion of white light.
Q21. When can we see a rainbow?
Ans. We can see a rainbow after it rains when the sun is low
in the sky, only when our back is towards the sun.
