Symbols

People need to belong and feel like they are part of something significant and that their contribution
matters. Bolman and Deal note that peoples are motivated more by power than money (Page 267,
2017). This has been reiterated in my own organization where the competition has been fierce to
be promoted. By the same respect, our customers have the mentality that if they can’t get what
they want or need from the first line manager they are dealing with, they have no qualms about
reaching up to that person’s boss to get assistance (Page 267, 2017).

Bolman and Deal list tenets of the symbolic frame that are important thoughts to keep in mind
about leading an organization and finding balance in moving the organization forward while
ensuring those that are with you, want to be and feel connected to the whole.
