If you come across something coming in at 8.6 metres high and weighing 70 tonnes which has
a lion’s head and a fish’s body, you are witnessing the architectural icon otherwise known as the
Merlion statue. The icon is located near the famous Fullerton Hotel and the Esplande, with splendid
views of the entire Marina Bay arena.
The white-cement artwork was created in 1972 by sculptor Mr. Lim Nang Seng to illustrate
Singapore’s creation, the story of the fisher village Singapore once was and how the city got its name.
The lion head with a fish tail is not only a fantastic sight; it is also often printed on T-shirts, mugs,
hats, and other souvenirs. It certainly is Singapore’s most cherished mascot.
The Merlion Park is a great outing for the entire family, especially in the late afternoon and
early evening hours when the sun goes down. The twilight will set The entire Marina Bay Skypark,
Art Science Museum, Helix Bridge, and Singapore Flyer on the opposite side of the Marina Bay, in a
beautiful soft light. It is also a fantastic spot for taking night photos and to experience the impressive
“Laser show” from the Marina Bay Sands.

Stonehenge is located in Salisbury plain in Wiltshire, England. It is not just one big
structure, it’s made of a series of seven different kinds of stones but the majority of it is Sarcen, which
is hard sandstone. It is also made of Bluestone; rocks from the Welsh Preseli Mountains. There are
very many different kinds of people who have put thought into who built Stonehenge, some of those
thoughts included druids, Greeks, Phoenicians, and Atlantians. There are also many different theories
on why it was built including for human sacrifice to astronomy.
The Stonehenge was a much respected piece of art during 2000 BC. In its day, the
construction of Stonehenge was a really big deal; it requited commitment, time, and huge amounts of
hard labour. In its first phase, Stonehenge was a large earthwork; a bank and ditch arrangement called
a henge, was made about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that the ditch was dug with tools made from
the antlers of red deer and, possibly, wood. It was then loaded into baskets and carried away. More
recent experiments have shown that these tools were more than equal to the great task of earth digging
and moving. Some people claim it was created by many different people over a long period of time.
The actual building process of Stonehenge was very complicated. Its origin is controversial.
Believers say it was the creation of Merlin the magician, while some owe it to extraterrestrials.
Stonehenge’s association with druids dates only from 1905, and has no historical basis, but there are
claims that druids gathered near this monument to invoke the Gods and that it served for some
magical purpose.

Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo) due to its elegant, white
appearance, is widely considered Japan’s most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and
its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage
site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and
survives to this day as one of the country’s twelve original castles. The castle recently underwent
extensive renovation over several years and was fully re-opened to the public in March 2015.
Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city
of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually
enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it
survives today is over 400 years old and was completed in 1609. It comprises over eighty buildings
spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths.
Most visitors to Himeji Castle enter the castle via the Otemon Gate into the admission free
third bailey (Sannomaru). The Sannomaru contains of a large, cherry tree lined lawn, and is a popular
spot for taking photos of the castle and for viewing cherry blossoms. A ticket booth can be found at
the far end of the bailey, where the Hishi Gate marks the entrance to the paid area.

The first electric light was made in 1800 by Humphry Davy, an English scientist. He
experimented with electricity and invented an electric battery. When he connected wires to his battery
and a piece of carbon, the carbon glowed, producing light. This is called an electric arc.
Much later, in 1860, the English physicist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (1828-1914) was
determined to devise a practical, long lasting electric light. He found that a carbon paper filament
worked well, but burned up quickly. In 1878, he demonstrated his new electric lamps in Newcastle,
England.
In 1877, the American Charles Francis Brush manufactured some carbon arcs to light a public
square in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. These arcs were used on a few streets, in a few large office
buildings, and even some stores. Electric lights were only used by a few people.
The inventor Thomas Alva Edison experimented with thousands of different filaments to find
just the right materials to glow well and be long-lasting. In 1879, Edison discovered that a carbon
filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. Edison eventually produced
a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours.
Lewis Howard Latimer (1848-1928) improved the bulb by inventing a carbon filament
(parented in 1881); Latimer was a member of Edison’s research team, which was called “Edison’s
Pioneers”. In 1882, Latimer developed and patented a method of manufacturing his carbon filaments.
In 1903, Willis R. Whitney invented a treatment for the filament so that it wouldn’t darken
the inside of the bulb as it glowed. In 1910, William David Coolidge (1873-1975) invented a tungsten
filament which lasted even longer than the older filaments. The incandescent bulb revolutionized the
world.
Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours

A. Does Edison eventually produce a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours?
B. Was Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours?
C. Did Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours?
D. Was Edison eventually produce a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours?

Rengasdengklok
On August 14, 1945, Japan surrender unconditionally to the Allies. The news was kept secret
by the Japanese army in Indonesia, but Sutan Syahrir, the youth of Indonesia, knew it through the
BBC Radio Broadcasts in London on August 15, 1945. At the same time, Ir. Soekarno and Drs. Moh
Hatta returned to the Indonesia from Saigon, Vietnam.
On August 15, at 8 p.m., under the leadership of Chairul Saleh, younger groups and older groups
gathered in the backroom Bacteriology Laboratory which was located at Jalan Pegangsaaan Timur
number 13, Jakarta. The younger group argued that Indonesia had to declare their independence
immediately. But the older group didn’t agree about that because of that, independence should be
discussed on PPKI meeting on August 18, 1945.
Because there was a different opinion between older groups and younger groups, younger groups
brought Soekarno and Hatta to Rengasdengklok in early morning of August 16, 1945.
Rengasdengklok was chosen because it was located away from Jakarta. Younger groups tried to push
Soekarno and Hatta to declare Indonesia Independence
After had a long discussion, Soekarno was willing to declare it after returning to Jakarta.
At that moment in Jakarta, Wikana from younger groups and Ahmad Soebarjo from older groups
made a negotiation. The result was that the declaration of Indonesia Independence should be held in
Jakarta. In addition, Tadashi Maeda allowed his place for negotiations and he was willing to
guarantee their safety. Finally, Soekarno and Hatta were picked from Rengasdengklok.
At first Proclamation of Indonesia Independence would be read at Ikala Field. But looking at
the road to the Ikada Field was guarded by Japanese army. Finally they moved to residence of
Soekarno at Jalan Pegangsaan Timur number 56 Jakarta.
On the day of Friday, August 17 1945, Soekarno read the Proclamation of Indonesia
Independence text and then connected with a short speech without text. After that, Latif Hendra
Ningrat and Soehoed were fluttering the flag which had sewn by Mrs. Fatmawati. Then audience sang
Indonesia Raya song together. Finally the proclamation was heard throughout the country.

the result of guarding Ikada field we can find on paragraph 6.
The older groups approve that Indonesian Independence should be discussed on PPKI
meeting .
On August 6, 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the
United States. It demoralized the spirit of the Japanese army in the world. The following day, The
Committee for Indonesian Independence confirmed the wish to achieve the Independence of
Indonesia. On August 9, 1945, the second atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, causing the Japanese
surrendered to the United States and its allies.
On 14 August 1945, Japan formally surrendered to the Allies on board the USS Missouri.
Hearing this, a young group urged elderly to immediately proclaim the independence of Indonesia in
a meeting held on 15 August 1945, at Pegangsaan Timur 13 Jakarta. However, the elderly did not
want the young group to rush. Because there was a different opinion between older groups and

Once upon a time, there were a rich couple named Dondong and Iska. They had a 12
years old daughter named Maria whom they loved deeply. Maria was a responsible daughter,
hard worker and kindhearted. Because of her traits, everybody loved Maria. However, she was
afraid of talking to other people. She would blush every time somebody greeted her and she
would just nod her head and wouldn’t utter a word. Because of this, she would often hide herself
in her room so she wouldn’t have any chance of mingling with other people.
Maria loved taking care of her flowers. She took good care of the flowers in her garden.
She loved it there because she found refuge and happiness in the garden.
One day, the towns people heard horrifying news. A group of bandits came to a nearby
town and killed all the people who tried to hide their money and other belongings from them. The
next day, the group of bandits had reached the town where the family of Dondong, Iska and their
daughter Maria lived. Dondong saw the group of bandits was walking towards them, so he decided
to hide Maria in her flower garden in order the bandits didn’t find their daughter. Then Dondong
and Iska hid inside their house, frightened and shaken. The bandits hit Dondong on his head; he
lost consciousness and fell down on the floor. Iska, on the other hand, tried to run and escape but
she was hit on her head and fell down as well. Finally, she also lost consciousness. The bandits
knew they had a daughter and they searched the whole house to find the little girl but they couldn’t
find Maria. They took all their money and jewelries and they left.
When Dondong and Iska woke up, the bandits had already walked away. They
immediately ran towards the flower garden to find their young daughter, Maria. Much to their
surprise, Maria was gone! They tried to look for her everywhere but still, they did not find
Maria. They went back to the flower garden and searched on every corner but they didn’t find
Maria.
“My daughter! They took away my daughter!” Iska shouted.
Dondong and Iska saw a small plant that quickly closed its leaves. They saw that the
plant would open up and close its leaves again in one touched. Because of this, they believed
that the plant was Maria. God made Maria into a plant to save her from those bandits.
From then on, Dondong and Iska took good care of the plant. They believed and they
knew that the plant was indeed their daughter Maria. Just like their daughter, the plant was also
quite shy. Because of that, they called the plant “makahiya”.

A Thousand Years
By Christina Perri
Heart beats fast Colors and promises How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt, suddenly goes away somehow One step closer
I have died everyday, waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands still Beauty in all she is I will be brave
I will not let anything, take away What's standing in front of me
Every breath, every hour has come to this One step closer
And all along I believed, I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me, I have loved you for a thousand years I'll love you for a
thousand more
One step closer

The issue of wearing face coverings in public comes up frequently these days. A common sentiment
is, “If I am not personally at high risk for COVID-19, why should I wear a mask?” I suspect this is
why I see so many people in public places who are not covering their nose and mouth. The CDC has
recommended “wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures
are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant
community-based transmission.”
The reason for this is that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread even before symptoms
appear, by such things as coughing, sneezing, or even speaking at close range. Cloth face coverings
have been recommended due to their low cost and ready availability. By using cloth face coverings, it
preserves surgical masks and N-95 masks for healthcare workers who may be involved in direct care
of patients with COVID-19.
The importance of using face coverings in public is illustrated in the graphic seen here. If I wear my
face covering to protect you from me, and you wear your face covering to protect me from you, then
we can all dramatically decrease our risk of transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19. This, in
conjunction with social distancing and frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer, will be
important in limiting the spread of COVID-19 as we return to our usual activities.
Michael Roberts, M.D., is a hospitalist at EAMC and is the hospital’s current Chief of Staff.

have been recommended due to their low cost and ready availability.

A natural disaster is a terrible accident, e.g. a great flood, a big fire or an earthquake. It usually causes
great suffering and loss of a large sum of money. The casualties are injured or died. Some people are
homeless and need medical care.
Floods occur when the water of rivers, lakes, or streams overflow their banks and pour onto the
surrounding land. Floods are caused by many different things. Often heavy rainstorms that last for a
brief can cause a flood. But not all heavy storms are followed by flooding. If the surrounding land is
flat and can absorb the water, no flooding will occur. If, however, the land is hard and rocky, heavy
rain cannot be absorbed. Where the banks are low, a river may overflow and flood adjacent lowland.
In many part of the world flood are caused by tropical storms called hurricanes or typhoons. They
bring destructive winds of high speed, torrents of rain, and flooding. When a flood occurs, the
destruction to surrounding land can be severe. Whole villages and towns are sometimes swept away
by water pouring swiftly over the land. Railroad track blocked and uprooted from their beds.
Highways are washed away.
When a building caught fire, the firemen pitched in to help battle the blaze. Before the pumps were
invented, people formed bucket brigades to fight fires. Standing side by side, they formed a human
chain from the fire to nearby well or river. They passed buckets of water from to hand to be poured on
the flames. The damage of the fire did depend a great deal on where it happened. In the country or a
small village, only a single house might burn down. But in crowded cities, fire often destroyed whole
blocks and neighborhoods before being controlled.

Cyber bullying is a threat or attack carried out through electronic messages as the media. Bullying
usually occurs only in the real world, but it also occurs now in cyberspace.
Cyber bullying is a new event because of the development of communication technology. Nowadays,
it is interpreted as a hurtful act that is done intentionally through the computers, cellular and other
electronic devices and those who are bullied cannot defend themselves.
Cyber bullying is done by sending comments that contain hatred on blogs, social media, e-mail, and
posts in order to insult others. This can lead to reduced self-confidence of someone which leads to
anxiety, and depression.
Cyber bullying is a crime that must be avoided. This is a psychological threat for individuals. For
those reason, mental preparation and regulating emotions are needed when using internet. [sc:ads]

From the beginning of 2020, the world has been in an emergency status following the outbreak of an
infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease, known
as Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as of today (May 2020) has killed 247 thousand people
worldwide. There are 3.5 million confirmed cases in 210 countries and territories around the world.
But how do people get infected by COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease;
therefore, it is mainly transmitted through "respiratory droplets", droplets of virus-laden mucus that
are ejected when symptomatic people sneeze or cough. To prevent these droplets from falling on
people is why it is advised for us to maintain 2-metre distance from each other. Wearing face masks is
also important to prevent ejection the droplets and reduce the chance of incidentally inhaling them.
Keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent
elbow or tissue. Check local advice where you live and work.
Transmission by contact is also a possible route of the infection. Viral particles from the respiratory
droplets land on an object; someone touches the object, then touches their mouth, eyes, or nose. The
virus then slips into their body via their mucous membrane, infecting the person. Although people
who are infected often have symptoms of illness, some people without symptoms may also be able to
spread virus.
More studies are still being conducted to this day to learn more about the virus, how it is spread, and
how to stop it. So far, the most effective way to cut the routes of transmission is by maintaining
physical distance and avoiding prolonged contact.

Explanation Text (Natural Phenomena)
In our modern-day human culture, decomposition and decay have often come to be viewed
quite negatively. The former is mainly associated with things that are rotten, have a bad smell and are
generally symptomatic of death. The latter is similarly viewed as undesirable. Examples include urban
decay, or, on a more personal level, tooth decay. However, decomposition and decay are vital
processes in nature. They play an essential role in the breakdown of organic matter, recycling it and
making it available again for new organisms to utilize.
Decomposition and decay are the yin to the yang of growth. Together they form two halves of
the whole that is the closed-loop cycle of natural ecosystems. Everything dies, and without
decomposition and decay the world would overflow with plant and animal remains. It would also
experience a decline in new growth, due to a shortage of nutrients that would be locked up and
unavailable in the dead forms.
Decomposition is the first stage in the recycling of nutrients that have been used by an
organism (plant or animal) to build its body. It is the process whereby the dead tissues break down
and are converted into simpler organic forms. These are the food source for many of the species at the
base of ecosystems. The species that carry out the process of decomposition are known as detritivores.
Detritivore means literally ‘feeders on dead or decaying organic matter’. Many of these decomposer
species function in tandem or parallel with one another. Each is responsible for a specific part of the
decomposition process. Collectively they are known as the detritivore community.
A wide range of organisms takes part in the decomposition process. Most of them are
inconspicuous and unglamorous. From a conventional human perspective, they are even undesirable.
The detritivore community includes insects such as beetles and their larvae as well as flies and
maggots (fly larvae). It also includes woodlice, fungi, slime moulds, bacteria, slugs and snails,
millipedes, springtails and earthworms. Most of them work out of sight, and their handiwork isn’t
immediately obvious, but they are the forest’s unsung heroes of recycling. Almost all of them are tiny,
and their function happens gradually in most cases, over months or years. But together they convert
dead plants and animals into forms that are useable either by themselves or other organisms.
Decomposition in plants. The primary decomposers of most dead plant material are fungi.
Dead leaves fall from trees and herbaceous plants collapse to the ground after they have produced
seeds. These form a layer of litter on the soil surface. The litter layer can be quite substantial in
volume. The litter fall in a Scots pine is around 1-1.5 tones per hectare per year, while that in
temperate deciduous forests is over 3 tones per hectare per year. The litter is quickly invaded by the
hyphae of fungi. Hyphae are the white thread-like filaments that are the main body of a fungus. (The
mushrooms that appear on the forest floor, are merely the fruiting bodies of the fungus.) The hyphae
draw nourishment from the litter. This enables the fungi to grow and spread, while breaking down the
structure of the dead plant material. Bacteria also play a part in this process, as do various
invertebrates, including slugs, snails and springtails. As the decay becomes more advanced,
earthworms begin their work.
This decomposition process is usually odorless. It is aerobic, meaning that it takes place in the
presence of air (oxygen in particular). On the forest floor it is spread out in both space and time. When
people make compost heaps in their garden, they are utilizing the same process. It is concentrated and
accelerated by piling the dead material together in a heap, and the heat that is generated speeds up the
process of decay.
Fungi that feed on dead plant material are called saprotrophic fungi. Common examples
include the horsehair parachute fungus, which can be seen growing out of dead grass stems, leaves or
pine needles. Another is the sulphur tuft fungus, which fruits on logs that are at an advanced state of
decomposition.
Some decomposers are highly-specialized. For example, the earpick fungus grows out of
decaying Scots pine cones that are partially or wholly buried in the soil. Another fungus known as
Cyclaneusma minus grows on the fallen needles of Scots pine.

After reading the text, we know that decaying is the indispensable chain of life. What is the important
function of the decomposition process for the continuance of the living things in this world?
