Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social function is
to describehow something is completely done through a sequence of series. Communicative
purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps.
There are three generic structures in procedure text. The first is goals or purposes. The second is
materials or tools. The third and the last are steps or methods. To know the text that we read is
procedure or not is so simple. You can read the title if the title is started with ‘how to make…’ or
‘how to use…’ it can be certainly that the text is procedure text.
Use an imperative sentence which is a sentence form that is usually used to give commands. For
example don't mix, turn on, cut into slices and so on.
Procedure text has a generic structure that is different from other types of text, namely:
Located in the title text and is used to indicate the purpose of the text.
• Ingredients/materials
Contains the materials or tools required in the steps of carrying out the process.
Example : The materials to make an omelet are egg, onion, vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.
• Steps/methods
Contains ways, methods, or steps taken to achieve the goals in the text
Example Procedure Text about Food (pancakes)
Ingredients:
5 eggs
40 gram sugar
Salt
Honey
Instructions:
First, separate the egg yolk and the white. Then beat the egg white until stiff.
In a separated bowl, mix the egg yolks with sugar until the sugar melts.
Next, add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Then stir until all the ingredients mixed.
Slowly pour all the mixture ingredients into one bowl. Then add vanilla extract and mix it.
Then heat a pan over a low-medium heat and coat it with butter. Use a 1/4 cup measure to scoop
and drop the batter into the pan so that you get evenly-sized pancakes.
Cook until the first side is golden brown, or until the top surface forms bubbles.
Finally, serve the pancake while it is still warm with honey. You can add some fruits like grapes or
strawberry to make it more delicious.
