What’s being done to study Earth’s Layers?
-Observing seismic waves to observe the layers
-Conduct Lab Experiments
-Use Isaac Newton’s evidence
What Tools/Tech Has Been Invented/Used To Help?

-Drillships
-High power carbon dioxide lasers
-Tungsten Carbide roller cones
-Riserless Mud Recovery (RMH)
How and where have they drilled the furthest

-Kola peninsula
-Created a drill where only the
tip/bit rotated
-Took about 20 years
-Stopped the project due to the
chaos of the post-soviet Russia
ordeal
Why Is It So Difficult To Dig Far Into Our Layers?

-Temperatures rise with every kilometer dug

-Pressure also rises
-Need a team to make trip successful
Magnetic Field
Why Is The Magnetic Field Important?

-Acts as a type of shield

-If it were to disappear
-GPS would stop working
-The south Atlantic Anomaly could become more
common around the world
-Compass’ would find the closest magnetic source
and use that as a replacement
Has The Magnetic Field Been Around For All Of
Earth’s History?
-hard to tell
-Has existed for at least 3.5 billion years
-started to harden/solidify 1 billion years ago
-driven by other mechanism before
What Do We Know About The Magnetic Field?

-powered by solidifying liquid core

---It is powerful electric currents that reach far
out into space
-named the Geomagnetic field
What Are Magnetic Reversals?

-Dictionary definition
-A change in the Earth's magnetic field resulting in the magnetic

north being aligned with the geographic south, and the magnetic south
being aligned with the geographic north. Also called geomagnetic
reversal

-chunks of stirred up liquid iron get flipped

-reversed aligned atoms
What would happen if a magnetic reversal happened
again??
-communications and power grids could be
disrupted
-migratory animals would face some issues
-multiple north and south poles
-more vulnerable to cancer
-compass wouldn’t work and GPS would be
Should We Worry About Another Magnetic Reversal?

-Probably not
-major chaos won’t breakout
-power outages
-parts of Earth inhabitable(maybe)
-Reversal won’t happen overnight
If it were to reverse again- what would happen to us
and how would it affect the world?
-weakness in field
-cancerous radiation
-no continental shift
What’s The difference Between True North And South
And Magnetic North And South?
True
-meet at lines of longitude
-completely opposite of eachother

Magnetic
-Meet where the northern lines of attraction enter Earth
-about 311 miles from true north pole
