 Concept Note: Narration
Narration is a very important rhetorical pattern in writing. Narration means telling
a story or account, which may be factual or fictional. A narrative paragraph or essay
tells a story. It explains how something happened.

 Abstraction:
A narration can be objective or subjective. If it is objective, it means that your
narration is direct and factual. If the narration is subjective, it means that your narration
has a personal interpretation

 Concept Note:
Description is a representation of something or someone in words; It is one of the
main rhetorical patterns that creates a mental image of a thing, a person or character, or
an event. This is used when a writer aims to convey the readers the physical
characteristics of a person, place, or thing..

 Abstraction:
Description may be subjective or objective, A subjective description contains
impressions, while an objective description is factual or reportorial, like an informational
report.
As a writer, you need to utilize sensory details to form images into your readers’
mind. Your description will reveal your point of view toward the subject you are writing
about.
 Analysis
Give examples of descriptive words under each sensory word category.

 Concept/Topic:
Writers use definition to provide meaning to terms and ideas. It is best backed up
by explanations and examples to be understood.

 Abstraction:
Definitions are important especially when you go into formal, academic,
professional ,technical, or legal texts. Why? Because your definition will help people
understand you. In many instances, misunderstandings arise because people are
not clear about the definition of a given term.

 Content/Topic: Exemplification or Classification
An exemplification is an example of the concept that you are discussing. When
writers use the exemplification or classification pattern, they provide examples for
general ideas, group these examples, and provide labels.

 Abstraction:
Examples of a concept must be easy to understand and relevant to the context of
the audience.
