CONTROL OF TUBER ROT USING PHYTO-PROTECTANTS

ABSTRACT
Extracts from different plant parts were tested against Sclerotium rolfsi causing tuber rot of Potato. Potato
tuber variety viz., Kufari chandramukhi was treated with such crude extracts of Euphorbia hirta at room
temperature. Leaf extract of E. hirta was found most effective among the different extracts found to
control the Potato rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsi

INTRODUCTION
Potato (Solanum, tuberosum L.) is one of the most important nutritive food Crop. It contains,
carbohydrate, proteins, vitamin and trace elements. It is used in cotton industries for sizing cotton, used in
paper industries and for Alcohol production (Chaddha, 1994). In view of above properties of Potato, it
offer a permanent solution of twenty first century's problems, such as Hunger, Malnutrition and
unemployment (Khurana, 2000).
Potato tuber suffers from different storage diseases as Black Scar, Common Scab, Soft rot, Brown rot and
dry rot. Among these — Potato tuber rot is one of the important diseases that causes heavy loss to tuber
(Robert, 1940; Gadewar, 1989; Khurana, 1998; Wakle and Kareppa, 2000). The number of white files per
plant was observed at alternate day interval. Potato tuber rot can be controlled by synthetic Pesticides,
Fungicides and chemicals but they have numbers of side effects.
The greatest problem is that the pesticides residue remains in the soil and also gets accumulated in the
tuber hence cause human health hazard (Jyostana, 2001).
Hence present investigation has been carried out for disease management using phyto-protectants.

MATERIALS AND METHODS


The extracts of Euphorbia hirta leaves were prepared in 10% alcohol. One gram of leaf was crushed with
minimum volume of 10% alcohol in sterile mortar and pestle, under aseptic condition. The final volume
was made up to 100 ml with 10% alcohol.

The potato slices with 10 mm thickness and 75 mm diameter were prepared form fresh potato of kufri
chandra mukhi variety. The slices were dipped in different concentrations of Euphorbia hirta leaves
extracts such as 1.5, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 percent concentrations for 5 minutes.
A Slices were kept in sterile petriplates. On the slice 5 mm mycelial mat of Sclerotium rolfsi were
inoculated aseptically. The slice with distilled water served as control. All the plates were keep for
incubation at room temperature for 8 days. The plates were observed at 24hr interval. Readings of
increasing growth of Sclerotium rolfsi were taken in millimeter (Solunke, 1999; Wakle and Kareppa,
2000).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION


Results
Phyto-protectants are non toxic, non hazardous and eco friendly and can be used to control tuber rot of
potato.
The effect of extract of Euphorbia hirta was tested against the Sclerotium rolfsi, the causal agent of dry
rot of Potato. Among different plants, Euphorbia hirta extract tested against Sclerotium rolfsi was found
most effective. Among different concentrations tested, 4.5 % concentration checked complete growth of
Sclerotium rolfsi which support work carried by earlier researchers (Jyostana, 1999; Savvamangala et al.,
1993; Sobit et al., 1995; Harendra et al., 1995; Jyostana, 1997; Shrivastava, 1997).
