Introduction

Background of the Study

Hibiscus-rosa sinensis also known as Gumamela in the areas of Philippines and

are abundant in the tropical areas, is considered to be an edible plant particularly its

flower and leaves. Recent study of Goldman (2018) stated that the flowers and leaves

can be made into teas and liquid extracts that can help treat a variety of conditions.

Hibiscus has been used by different cultures as a remedy for several conditions. When

used as a tea and extract, modern studies generally considered it safe.

Objectives:

• Develop new ice candy flavor with Gumamela extract

• Determine the acceptability of the product with:

a. Aroma

b. Taste

c. Texture

• Evaluate the entrepreneurial potential of the product

Significance of the Study

More than being known for its colorful blossom, the flower of this plant was

realized for a purpose of helping individuals in the business sector to gain more income

through innovative opportunities, and at the same time has cheaper and more organic

ingredients that are favorable.

This study would benefit the following:

a. Local vendors

b. Unemployed individuals

c. Students

d. Customers including young and adults

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the relevant articles, studies, and literatures that will serve as

the basis of this study.

Healthy Benefits

Test-tube studies have found that hibiscus extract reduces the growth and

spread of plasma, mouth, prostate and stomach cancer cells. Human studies are

needed, however, to evaluate the effect of hibiscus tea.

In addition to having antioxidant and anticancer properties, some test-tube studies have

found that hibiscus could help fight bacterial infections. Some studies have found that

hibiscus extract may lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, it should not

be taken with hydrochlorothiazide to prevent an interaction, Link (2018).

Study of Goldman (2018) revealed that the red flowers of this variety are most

commonly cultivated for medical purposes, and are available as dietary supplements.

Hibiscus is popular for its potential to reduce high blood pressure, both the tea and

hibiscus plant extract to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Egyptians used

hibiscus tea to lower body temperature, treat heart and nerve diseases, and as a

diuretic to increase urine production. In Africa, tea was used to treat constipation,

cancer, liver disease, and cold symptoms. Pulp made from the leaves was applied to

the skin to heal wounds. In Iran, drinking sour tea is still a common treatment for high

blood pressure.

A recent study conducted by Blumber et al., (2009) suggest daily consumption of

hibiscus tea, in an amount readily incorporated into the diet, lowers BP in pre- and

mildly hypertensive adults and may prove an effective component of the dietary

changes recommended for people with these conditions. In this study, clinical trial was

conducted in 65 people, who were given hibiscus tea or a placebo. After six weeks,

those who drank hibiscus tea had a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure,

compared to the placebo. While hibiscus tea may be a safe and natural way to help

lower blood pressure, it is not recommended for those taking hydrochlorothiazide, a

type of diuretic used to treat high blood pressure, as it may interact with the drug.
According to Link (2018) Hibiscus is high in polyphenols, which are compounds

that have been shown to possess powerful anti-cancer properties. Study of Miloso et al.,

revealed that hibiscus impaired cell growth, exerted a reversible cytostatic effect, and

reduced cell motility and invasiveness in Multiple Myeloma. It commonly possesses

antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and chemopreventive properties. This study suggests

that the HIbiscus may be a potential therapeutic agent against MM as it contains

cytostatic effect.

Methodology

Ingredients and equipment:

 Casserole
 Spoon
 Knives
 Chopping board
 Stove
 Mixer/whisk
 Funnel
 Atleast 20-25 pieces of gumamela petal
 half kilo of sugar
 250mL all purpose cream
 4 cups of water
 1 can of condensed milk
 Measuring cup
Procedure:

The following are steps for creating Gumamela Flavored Ice Candy

 Using an electric mixer, combine the chilled all-purpose cream, 3 cups of water

and condensed milk in a mixing bowl.

 Add the gumamela syrup into the mixture.

 You can also add food coloring (the color of your choice)

 Check the consistency of the product then sprinkle it with cut gumamela bits.

 Use the funnel to pack the mixture into a plastic cellophane-standard size for ice

candy

 Put it in the refrigerator and wait until it frozen

Gumamela syrup:

First is to boil 1 cup of water, next step is to add 3 cups of white sugar. Mix it until a right

consistency of syrup is met, add the crushed petals into the mixture and mix it

thoroughly. Lastly, strain the mixture to separate the petals from the liquid.

Gumamela bits:

Cut tiny bits of ice cream into smaller pieces-around 1mm. You can also use mortar and

pestle to mince the petals.

Locale of the study

The study was conducted at Purok Gomoco, Municipality of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.

5 samples were chosen inside the household of Paraiso family.

Testing the product

To be able to determine the acceptability of the product, each of the 5 samples inside

the household of Paraiso family were given one piece of ice candy. Regarding with the

product’s taste, 5 of the samples agreed that it is extremely acceptable. However, only 3

of them stated that the texture is acceptable. 4 of the samples agreed that it has an

acceptable aroma.

Costing Profit

250 mL all purpose cream (60 pesos) 60 pcs of ice candy were

1 can of condensed milk (35) made x (3 pesos each)

Half kilo of white sugar (28) Total profit: 180 pesos

Gumamela Petals (for syrup and bits) (free –

gumamelas are abundant and common in the locality)

Total cost: 123 pesos

Conclusion

A conclusion has been drawn based on the findings

Based in the result of the test, gumamela flavored ice candy was accepted by the

consumers regarding with the product’s texture, aroma and taste. The product is not

only for children, but also for any adults who seeks pleasure in eating this kind of

dessert. Moreover, the results have proven that gumamela flavored ice candy has an

entrepreneurial potential to be sold in the market. Therefore, this imply that the

gumamela flavored ice candy is extremely acceptable.

Recommendation:

(1) This product is highly recommended to the local vendors who wants to start small

business at home

(2) Unemployed individuals must consider this product for its entrepreneurship

potential

(3) Researcher may conduct another study using gumamela extract as an additive

as for any food production
