Summary

In this document, we will review the use and setup of Batch Management in ECC & EWM.
also, in this document I have try to cover 3 business scenarios of batch usage. In the end of
this document, I will try to explain difference in configuration between Decentralized SCM
EWM & S/4 HANA Embedded EWM.

Business Scenarios covered are mention below.

1. Batch Created manually before actual delivery creation in ECC.

2. Batch Creation in the background at the time of ECC delivery creation.
3. Batch Creation in the background at the time of delivery activation in EWM.

Introduction

Batches are used in many industry sectors, such as pharmaceutical, chemical, and
manufacturing to differentiate products by characteristics. You can capture technical,
physical, or chemical properties of stock via the batch and use these characteristics.
in warehouse processing. If you have a product, for example, Paint Box, it can be
characterized by the properties color, COO, and expiration date. You can create a product
master that you can enable batch management from. First, you assign a batch class with
the three characteristics. Then, during inbound processing, you can set a batch and
maintain the characteristics for it. For outbound processing, if you get a customer order to
ship a green lacquer with a certain viscosity requirement, EWM will then suggest the best
batch for the customer’s needs.

If you want to use batches in EWM with connection to ERP, you must set up unique.
batch names at the material level. To specify the batch level in the ERP IMG, follow the
menu path Logistics - General • Batch Management • Specify Batch Level and Activate
Status Management • Batch Level.

Note: From EWM 9.4 Version onwards, it is possible to maintain batch at Plant level. Please
refer below release Note from SAP.

Activity Steps
(Include T-Code if
available)

Scenario 1: Batch Created manually before actual delivery creation.

1. Specify Batch

>>General >>Batch
Management
>>Specify Batch
Level and Activate
Status Management

2. Configure SAP

9. Create
Characteristics

10. Create Class

T-code CL02

NOTE: If we did not maintain Org area under characteristics while creating
class then in EWM when checking class in T-code CL03, characteristics will
be missing and in batch master also characteristics will be missing. If this
issue occurs, then CIF the material + batch + class & characteristics again to
EWM.

11. Create Material

Note: For batch manual creation, in classification tab we only maintain

Class and do not maintain characteristics as we maintain it in the batches
master through T Code: MSC1N

ECC – CL02
1. Create Separate
class and
characteristics and CIF
it to EWM

After CIF to EWM check it in T-code CL03

in classification tab.

Note: If we do not maintain values in material master then auto batch

creation in EWM is not possible.

Config Steps in S/4 HANA Embedded EWM.

There are some differences in S/4 HANA embedded EWM compares with decentralized SCM EWM
which are mention below.
SPRO >>IMG >> EWM No Number range in SCM EWM area.
>>Cross process
settings >>Batch
Management
SPRO >> IMG >> EWM Set Control Parameters for ERP Version Control
>> Interface >> ERP
Integration >> General
Settings.
Master data No more CIFs for master data (Materials, Batches, Class , Characterstics )
insist ALE/IDOC are used now in S/4 HANA Embedded EWM. In embedded
EWM, it isn’t required to send the batches, classes, and characteristics
of products from SAP S/4HANA to embedded EWM using Core Interface
(CIF).Batches are centrally maintained in SAP S/4HANA.

Note: With the introduction SAP S/4HANA 1809, SAP provides a more flexible solution in
batch management. A new feature has been introduced as a new field in material master,
batch management required indicator(Plant). Business can activate the batch management
for materials (batch level = material) but deactivate the batch management at plant level.
This functionality has outstretched the usage of batch management, with material being
managed in batches in 1 plant and simultaneously it can be non batch managed in another
plants. The ownership of using batch management now can be controlled from plants. Prior
to S/4 HANA 1809, if a product is batch managed and level of activation is at material level,
then all the plants were affected with this.
